NEW YORK – Cam Newton is the 2010 Heisman Trophy winner.
The junior quarterback became the third player in Auburn history to win the Heisman at the Best BuyTheater on Saturday night, confirming the widely held assumption that the stiff-arming, golden football player would soon belong to the Tigers’ dual-threat quarterback.
Newton beat out the three other finalists who were invited to New YorkStanford quarterback AndrewLuck, Oregon running back LaMichael James and Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore.
The 6-foot-6, 250-pound Newton accounted for a school-record 49 touchdowns and more than 4,000 yards from scrimmage this year, also becoming the first player in SEC history to rush for 1,000 yards and throw for 2,000 in the same season and the second player in NCAA history to run and pass for 20 touchdowns in the same year.
Newton is the first Auburn player to win the Maxwell and O’Brien awards, and the third Tiger – after Pat Sullivan (1971) and Bo Jackson (1985) – to win the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award.
And Saturday night, Newton joined Sullivan and Jackson in the Heisman fraternity.
“This is a phenomenal young man,” Auburn coach Gene Chizik said. “He’s different on the field and he’s different off the field. He’s a great kid. We get much joy and much satisfaction out of seeing our own get the benefits and see the fruits of his labor, which are many. It’s very well deserved, no question about it.
"Everything he gets he’s worked for and he deserves every bit of it."
