Hawthorn: 2014 AFL Premiers

HAWTHORN has made a mockery of its pre-Grand Final underdog status to smash the Sydney Swans by 63 points at the MCG on Saturday and claim its 12th premiership.

After the Swans kicked two of the game's opening three goals, Hawthorn completely dominated the game, their 21.11 (137) to 11.8 (74) victory clinching back-to-back flags for just the second time in the club's history.

It was the Hawks' wise old heads who led the way, with skipper Luke Hodge, former skipper Sam Mitchell and vice-captain Jordan Lewis ensuring Hawthorn avenged its 2012 Grand Final loss to the Swans.

Although it was hard to split the three stars, Hodge edged his two long-term teammates for the Norm Smith Medal for the best player on the ground. Hodge polled 10 votes to win his second Norm Smith Medal, having also won in 2008, with Lewis and Mitchell each polling nine votes.

The Hawk skipper had 35 possessions and, as usual, did it all for the Hawks, cutting off Swans attacks at half-back, winning clearances in the midfield and drifting forward to kick two goals.

Lewis finished with a game-high 37 possessions and Mitchell had 33 as the Hawks' midfield dominated a Swans' on-ball division widely acknowledged as the best in the competition.

Hawthorn spearhead Jarryd Roughead kicked a game-high five goals to follow up his bag of six against Port Adelaide last Saturday, and, perhaps more satisfyingly, claimed bragging rights over good mate and former Hawk Lance Franklin.

Franklin did his part for his new club with four goals, but was powerless to stop his former team's weight of dominance around the ground.

The Hawks' gamble on recalling Cyril Rioli for his first senior game since suffering a serious hamstring injury in round 15 paid off. The star forward had just nine possessions, but constantly harassed the Swans' defenders until he was substituted from the game early in the final term.

Hawthorn coach Alastair Clarkson said after the game he had never envisaged his team winning so easily against the Swans.

"We've planned for a long time for this. I know that the game materialised in a manner that said everything worked perfectly for us today [but] not in our wildest dreams did we anticipate it was going to be a 10-goal victory for our side this year," Clarkson said.

"In actual fact, no one saw it coming in terms of that margin, and many didn't see it coming even in that result because we were the underdogs."

Nick Malceski, who is widely expected to leave the Swans in the free agency period that starts on Friday, was one of the Swans' better performers with 26 possessions.

Josh Kennedy (29 possessions) played a lone hand for the Swans in the midfield as their on-ball division lowered its colours for one of the few times this year.

"We didn't apply the sort of pressure that we hoped to apply early, and we couldn't get it back," Longmire said.

"We didn't play the sort of football we wanted to. We didn't pressure the opposition when they had the ball, we couldn't get our hands on it.

"When we got our hands on it, we coughed it up and the opposition got it.

"We missed tackles and we were on the back foot from the first bounce.

"We were not able to wrest the momentum back at any stage. It was such a disappointing effort."

The Swans headed into Saturday's game as strong favourites after their dominant preliminary final win over North Melbourne and the Hawks' desperate three-point win over Port Adelaide.

However, the Hawks saved their 2014 best for last, stunning the Swans with suffocating pressure that forced the minor premier into a uncharacteristic slew of errors by hand and foot.

At kick-ins, the unlucky Swan with the ball in his hands often looked like a deer in the headlights and just as often coughed the ball straight up to the Hawks.

The Hawks, meanwhile, found time and space to slice the Swans apart with their unrivalled foot skills. And when they were not doing that, the likes of Bradley Hill and Liam Shiels were running the Swans ragged in open space.

In defence, last year's Norm Smith medallist Brian Lake was outstanding on Swans spearhead Kurt Tippett and Josh Gibson racked up 32 possessions.

The Hawks have now won three premierships since 2008, equalling Geelong's tally over the past decade.

The Cats' 2007, 2009 and 2011 flags looked to have stamped them as the dominant team of the post-Brisbane Lions premiership era (2001-2003), but the Hawks (2008, 2012-13) now have a legitimate claim to sharing that title.

Hawks coach Alastair Clarkson is now equal with John Kennedy snr and Allan Jeans as the most successful Hawthorn premiership coach, with the trio each boasting three flags.

Since entering the VFL/AFL competition in 1925, the Hawks had previously won back-to-back flags just once, in 1988-89.

The Swans started Saturday's game well enough and led by six points at the 13-minute mark of the first quarter.

But the Hawks took total control from there, slamming on the final four goals of the term to go into quarter-time 20 points in front.

The Hawks' dominance was reflected in the first-quarter tackle count (22-7), inside 50s (19-7) and uncontested possessions (69-48).

The Swans kicked the first goal of the second term through former Hawk Ben McGlynn to cut their deficit to 14 points.

But this proved a false dawn for Swans supporters as the Hawks piled on the next five goals, with Hodge's goal at the 16-minute mark of the second term putting Hawthorn up by 47 points.

The Swans then kicked consecutive goals for the first time in the game, through Adam Goodes and Franklin, to cut the Hawks' lead to 35 points at the 25-minute mark.

But when Roughead goaled less than three minutes later the Swans went into half-time 42 points down and had to engineer a comeback like Carlton's in the 1970 Grand Final to win.

But where the Blues were able to come back from 44 points down at the main break to beat Collingwood in 1970, the Hawks never allowed the Swans the faintest sniff of victory in the second half.

South Sydney Marches On

South Sydney's celebrations at making a grand final for the first time since 1971 were tempered on Friday night after star hooker Issac Luke was placed on report for a dangerous throw that threatens his availability for the historic clash.

Luke, who is a key member of the Rabbitohs side, faces an anxious wait to learn if he must defend a charge from the NRL match-review committee after the 38th-minute tackle on his close friend Sonny Bill Williams, whose second NRL stint ended along with the record 302-game career of his Sydney Roosters captain Anthony Minichiello after the premiers conceded 32 unanswered points to surrender an early 12-0 lead.

Souths second-rower Ben Te'o, who made his return from a four-match suspension for a chicken wing, was also involved in the tackle but is likely to be free to make his farewell appearance in the grand final before joining Williams and Rabbitohs lock Sam Burgess in rugby union.

However, any charge would rule Luke out of the clash as a grade-one dangerous throw is worth 125 demerit points and he has 50 carry-over points from a dangerous-contact charge earlier in the season that also adds 20 per cent loading to the base penalty.

The Kiwi international successfully challenged a dangerous-contact charge after lashing out at Canterbury hooker Michael Ennis in their round-25 clash and may need to do so again to play in the Rabbitohs biggest match for 43 years.

He was a member of the teams that lost the last two preliminary finals to the Bulldogs in Manly and played a significant role in Friday night's win at ANZ Stadium with 11 darting runs out of dummy half in which he made 98 metres and drew a penalty for Frank-Paul Nuuausala being offside near the Rabbitohs' try line.

If Luke is suspended, Souths coach Michael Maguire may have to alter the make up of his interchange bench to accommodate two hookers as he did earlier in the year when Apisai Koroisau and Cameron McInness deputised after injuries.

However, he has Jason Clark on the interchange and the Rabbitohs junior, who marched with his dad to protest the club's expulsion from the NRL in 2000, is able to play hooker.

Roosters props Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Sam Moa also face judiciary charges after being placed on report for separate incidents in a disappointing end to their bid to become the first team to win back to back premierships in a united competition since Brisbane beat St George in the 1992 and 1993 grand finals.

After the Roosters scored two tries in the opening eight minutes, the Rabbitohs appeared destined to again fall short of a grand final appearance and a shot at the elusive 21st premiership but the game turned midway through the first half and it was their arch rivals who were left frustrated and disappointed.

"It hasn't happened for 20 years and it is disappointing," Roosters halfback Mitchell Pearce said. "When we look back we will probably have a lot of regret but we just weren't good enough."
Waerea-Hargreaves was placed on report  for a shoulder charge on Te'o after a penalty had been awarded against the Roosters in the 23rd minute and he was again accused of leading with his head in a tackle on Souths centre Kirisome Auva'a in the dying moments.

Moa was also placed on report for a swinging arm in the same tackle that may rule him out of the Kiwis for the opening Four Nations match against Australia at Suncorp Stadium next month. Waerea Hargreaves has been charged twice this year.

Wire

Innocent, and in a sense I am
Guilty of the crime that's now in hand
Such a nice day
Throw your life away
Such a nice day
Let it go

Cold these eyes, I can't believe it
Cold, this heart is slow
Heart is stone

Call me
Such a cold heart
Such a cold man
Watch you tear your self apart

So lay me down
My soul to give
So lay me down
The longest sleep
Oh, the longest sleep

In I come and out you go you get
Here we are again now, place your bets
Is this the time
The time to win or lose
Is this the time
The time to choose

Cold these eyes, I can't believe it
So deep inside a cold fire
Cold, this heart is slow...
Heart is stone

Any time your on there
(Kiss me...)
Won't you tell me
That's it just give me it

In some white track
You come right back
Cartoon cutout
Cut throat let out
I'm on your side
Be on the both side
I'm on right track
You get off my back
I'm no dope
I give you hope
Here's the rope
Here's the rope
Now...
swing away!

How a new league logo can turn into something moe.

WELCOME TO MLS NEXT

Next. It’s a word that nods to the future with a wink to the past. Next year. The next generation. It reminds us that tomorrow is more important than yesterday and that the best question you can ever ask is: What’s next? At MLS, we’ve been asking What’s next? since the league's founding nearly 20 years ago. And recently the answers have been exciting and remarkable: new clubs, new stars, new media partnerships, new stadiums, and new fans. It’s all part of what’s next. And it deserves a new brand identity. Welcome to #MLSNEXT.

WORDMARK: MLS stands for Major League Soccer.
SLASH: The slash refers to soccer’s speed and energy. The slash begins outside the perimeter and drives upward at a 45-degree angle to illustrate both the nonstop nature of our game and the rising trajectory of our league. It bisects the crest to create a “first half” and “second half.”
STARS: The three stars represent the pillars of our brand: For Club, For Country, For Community.
PERIMETER: The perimeter represents the lines that mark off the field of play.
FIRST HALF AND SECOND HALF: The first half contains MLS and the three stars. The second half is an open white space that brings you in and out of the MLS world.

Of course...if you really think about it, the open white space can be interpreted as a window, so if we do some tweaking, we get this.

Major League Soccer = MLS = Madoka Loves Saimoe.

ISML 2014: Yuuki, Tachibana win Division Finals
Asuna Yuuki takes Sapphire Circlet, Kanade Tachibana wins Diamond Circlet

By Jo-Ryan Salazar
The Bedlam on Baltic Avenue
September 15, 2014

Match Day 4 of the 2014 International Saimoe League Postseason concluded, and we have two circlet winners. Let's take a look at the action from Postseason 4; we had a slight delay in tabulating the votes, by the way.

NOVA DIVISION

Asuna Yuuki won the Sapphire Circlet as the Nova Division Champion, defeating Nanami Aoyama 4006-2930. Yuuki is one of two contestants in the ISML to win multiple honors this season, alongside Kanade Tachibana in the Stella Division. Yuuki won every region except for the USA, Russia and Philippines, all of which went to Aoyama.

"Winning the Emerald was a honor for me already, but to also add the Sapphire Circlet is an even bigger honor for me and will go down as my parting present in the Nova, since I will be in the Stella next year," Yuuki said. "Thank you to everyone who supported me throughout this long and challenging season, you are all awesome in your own special way."

Tsukiko Tsutsukakushi was third after winning the closest race of the night: a 3273-3260 thriller over Yoshino, Kuroyukihime won fifth place after defeating Rikka Takanashi 3573-3229, Kurumi Tokisaki was seventh after prevailing over fellow Date A Live contestant Kotori Itsuka 3289-3082, Eru Chitanda was ninth after rolling past Azusa Azuki 3467-3040, Tohka Yatogami came in 11th after whipping past Yukino Yukinoshita 3428-3028, Shinka Nibutani finished in 13th place after a 3302-3206 barnburner over Kurousagi and Yaya was 15th after taking down Momo Velia Deviluke 3145-3004.

STELLA DIVISION

It was a closely-fought race, but Kanade Tachibana rode on big victories in Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Africa, Indonesia and the United States to defeat Mikoto Misaka 3522-3503 and win the Diamond Circlet as Stella Division Champion. Misaka's biggest victories came in Russia, the Middle East, Europe and Latin America, but close victories in China and Japan factored into the higher margin.

"To all the voters in Korea and the USA, thank you for believing in my vision as the leader of a free Saimoe world," said Tachibana at a victory rally at Seoul's Soongnyemun. "The years may come and go, but the more things change, the more they stay the same. I want to also congratulate Mikoto on a well-fought match and wish her well in the League finals. I will not be surprised if our paths cross again, and it should."

Taiga Aisaka was third after drubbing Ayase Aragaki 3591-3250, defending ISML Champion Ruri Gokou came in fifth after running past Eucliwood Hellscythe 3586-3090, Mashiro Shiina was seventh after storming past Mio Akiyanma 4050-2705, Shana torched Kobato Hasegawa 3916-2779 tp claim ninth place, Azusa Nakano finished 11th after defeating Saber 3465-3261, Inori Yuzuriha came in 13th after thumping Yui-nyan 3728-2953 and Yuri Nakamura shot down Haruhi Suzumiya 3440-3150 to claim 15th place.

Match Day 5 of the 2014 International Saimoe League Postseason, the first day of the ISML League Finals, is scheduled for September 21, 2014. Vote at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate and be sure to keep it here on the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue for continuing coverage of the 2014 edition of the International Saimoe League, still the world's premier anime character competition!

Like A Song...

Like a song I have to sing
I sing it for you
Like the words I have to bring
I bring it for you

And in leather, lace, and chains
We stake our claim
Revolution once again
No I won't...
I won't wear it on my sleeve
I can see through this expression
And you know I don't believe
Too young to be told
Exactly who are you
Tonight
Tomorrow's
Too late

And we love to wear a badge, a uniform
And we love to fly a flag
But I won't...let others live in hell
As we divide against each other
And we fight amongst ourselves
Too set in our ways to try to rearrange
Too right to be wrong, in this rebel song
Let the bells ring out
Let the bells ring out
Is there nothing left
Is there, is there nothing
Is there nothing left
Is honesty what you want!?

A generation without name, ripped and torn
Nothing to lose, nothing to gain
Nothing at all
And if you can't help yourself
Well take a look around you
When others need your time
You say it's time to go...it's your time
Angry words won't stop the fight
Two wrongs won't make it right
A new heart is what I need
Oh God, make it bleed

Is there nothing left...?

Walk blindly to the light and reach out for his hand
Don't ask any questions and don't try to understand
Open up your mind and then open up your heart
And you will see that you and me aren't very far apart

'Cause I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way

Violence is spread worldwide and there are families on the street
And we sell drugs to children now oh why can't we just see
That all we do is eliminate our future with the things we do today
Money is our incentive now so that makes it okay

But I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way

I've been seeing Lisa now for a little over a year
She said she's never been so happy but Lisa lives in fear
That one day daddy's gonna find out she's in love
With a nigger from the streets
Oh how he would lose it then but she's still here with me
'Cause she believes that love will see it through
And one day he'll understand
And he'll see me as a person not just a black man

'Cause I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
I believe I believe I believe I believe that love is the answer
I believe that love will find the way
Love will find the way
Love will find the way
Love will find the way
Please love find the way
Please love find the way...
