ISML 2012: Prelims Phase II wraps up

By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 28, 2012

Phase II of the 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries wrapped up on Wednesday, and eight new contestant have been entered into the field.

As predicted by the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue, Yui Hirasawa wrapped up Stella Group 5 with victories over Kagami Hiiragi 2583-1995 and Hecate 2583-1974. Rena Ryuuguu and Minori Kushieda also finished strong. Ryuuguu whipped past Kagura 2773-1624 and Rukia Kuchiki 2773-1431 and Kushieda outlasted Lala Satalin Deviluke 2269-2087 and Ruiko Saten 2269-1924.

Also as predicted by BoBA, Inori Yuzuriha will fly the flag for Guilty Crown, scoring Nova Group 5 victories over Asami Iwasawa 2751-2257 and Yuno Gasai 2751-1422. Haruka Morishima and Mami Tomoe also scored victories on the day. Morishima blew past Rin Kaga 2264-1822 and Chihaya Kisaragi 2264-1528. Tomoe, in a rare victory for the Puella Magi, shot down Reki 2618-1937 and Wendy Marvell 2618-1715.

BoBA called for Last Order to win Stella Group 6, and she did it, but it was close. Last ORder won a 2274-2197 thriller over Konjiki no Yami and edged Mikuru Asahina 2274-2046. Also winning close matches were Ushio Okazaki and Yomi Isayama. Okazaki defeated Maria 2307-2039 and Tsubasa Hanekawa 2307-1980. Isayama prevailed over Suiseiseki 2087-2004 and Sawako Kuronuma 2087-1454.

Erio Towa was projected by the Bedlam to win Nova Group 6, and it happened. Touwa routed Haqua du Lot Herminium 2550-2222 and Madoka Kaname 2550-1643. Ayase Shinomiya and Airi Sena also scored wins. Shinomiya took down Kirika Ueno 2575-1726 and Akari Akaza 2575-1601. Sena was all business against Nako Oshimizu 2824-1429 and Nano Shinonome 2824-1413.

Illyasviel von Einzbern was projected by BoBA to win Stella Group 7, and she got the job done with victories over Ikaros 2407-2327 and Ui Hirasawa 2407-1832. Kurimu Sakurano and Kazari Uiharu also finished their Stella 7 run on a winning note. Uiharu defeated Ai Enma 2411-1678 and Shinku 2411-1556. Sakurano rolled past Sakura Kinomoto 2266-1989 and Rika Furude 2266-1989.

Illyasviel's mother, Irisviel, will also be in the regular season, after cruising past Kanon Nakagawa 2226-2138 and Kanade Suzutsuki 2226-1924. Sayaki Miki and Houki Shinonono also came away victorious. Miki slashed past Naruko Anjou 2162-2013 and Haruka Amami 2162-1472. Shinonono rolled past Ohana Matsumae 2355-1997 and Kyouko Toshinou 2355-1618.

In the first of two surprise results, according to BoBA, Holo upset Kyou Fujibayashi 2278-2266 in Stella Group 8. Mafuyu Shiina was a distant third with 1764 votes. Mai Kawasumi and Fate Testarossa also finished the group with wins. Testarossa slammed Kaori Kanzaki 2471-2037 and Shiki Ryougi 2471-1427. Kawasumi, a mainstay in Kanon, prevailed over Kobato Hanato 2479-1965 and Hinata Hyuuga 2479-1165.

In Nova Group 8, Mayo Chiki's hopes for breaking through to the regular season have hit a speed bump in Nova Group 8 after the most unexpected of characters from The World God Only Knows became the first to fly the flag for the series. Shiori Shiomiya stunned Subaru Konoe 2169-1997 while putting the clamps on Fear Kubrick 2169-1997. Shirayuki Hotogi and Horizon Ariadust also finished Preliminaries Phase II with victories. Hotogi slashed past Mayuri SHiina 2457-2070 and Miu Amaha 2457-1505. Ariadust dusted off Miki Hoshii 2418-1853 and Himari Takakura 2418-1086.

Only one phase remains in the 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries, and that is Phase II. Judgement Week begins on April 8 with Match Day 15 of the Prelims and Match Day 1 of Phase III. Vote for your favorite candidates on InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.

ISML 2012: Who will survive Prelims II?

By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 23, 2012

Match Day 6 of the 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries Phase II is in the books, and we can indeed say that the stage is set for Super Sunday and Super Tuesday to determine the next 16 regular season contestants in both the Nova and Stella Divisions.

In Stella Group 5, Hecate, Kagami Hiiragi and Yui Hirasawa are expected to contend for the ticket. Hecate defeated Lala Satalin Deviluke 2887-2171 and Rukia Kuchiki 2887-1054. Hiiragi dominated Minori Kushieda 2981-2284 and Kagura 2981-1060. Hirasawa, tabbed by the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue as the group winner here, rocked Ruiko Saten 3260-1712 and Rena Ryuuguu 3260-1422.

Yuno Gasai, Asami Iwasawa and Inori Yuzuriha will duke it out for Nova Group 5 honors. Gasai slashed past Reki 2626-1316 and CHihaya Kisaragi 2626-1316. Asami Iwasawa blew past Wendy Marvell 3053-1633 and Rin Kaga 3053-1507. Yuzuriha, the face of Guilty Crown, rolled past Mami Tomoe 2896-2072 and Haruka Morishima 2896-1304.

Watch for a huge turnout on Tuesday between Mikuru Asahina, Konjiki no Yami and Last Order in Stella Group 6. Asahina whipped past Maria 2937-1861 and Yomi Isayama 2937-1418. Konjiki no Yami, the perennial breadwinner for To-Love-Ru, earned victories over Tsubasa Hanekawa 3024-2021 and Sawako Kuronuma 3024-1006. Last Order, picked by BoBA to win this group, defeated Ushio Okazaki 2944-2153 and Suiseiseki 2944-1178.

The Goddess, Madoka Kaname, was all business in her Nova Group 6 victories over Akari Akaza 2784-1797 and Nako Oshimizu 2784-1254. However, this will go down to either Haqua du Lot Herminium and the BoBA-tabbed Erio Touwa. Haqua cruised past Kirika Ueno 2962-1717 and Nano Shinonome 2962-1204. Touwa dominated Ayase Shinomiya 2880-1845 and Airi Sena 2880-1196.

Ikaros, Ui Hirasawa and Illyasviel von Einzbern will settle Stella Group 7. Ikaros flew past Sakura Kinomoto 3304-1785 and Ai Enma 3304-1030. Hirasawa trounced Rika Furude 3203-1999 and Shinku 3203-893. Illyasviel, projected by BoBA to win this group, defeated Kurimu Sakurano 3200-1810 and Kazari Uiharu 3200-1173.

Kanon Nakagawa, Irisviel von Einzbern and Kanade Suzutsuki have an equal chance of winning Nova Group 7. Nakagawa wiped out Kyouko Toshino 3194-1662 and Haruka Amami 3194-747. Irisviel scored victories over Ohana Matsumae 2947-2046 and Naruko Anjou 2947-989. Suzutsuki took down Houki Shinonono 2531-1942 and Sayaka Miki 2531-1683.

Holo, Kyou Fujibayashi and Mafuyu Shiina are ready to settle Stella Group 8. Holo chomped up Fate Testarossa 2622-2084 and Kobato Hanato 2622-1241. Fujibayashi laid the book on Shiki Ryogi 3106-1511 and Mai Kawasumi 3106-1213. Shiina outlasted Kaori Kanzaki 2983-2024 and Hinata Hyuuga 2983-933.

Subaru Konoe is the favorite by BoBA to win Nova Group 8, after scoring victories over Shirayuki Hotogi 2462-2135 and Horizon Ariadust 2462-1137. However, she will face still competition from Shiori Shiomiya and Fear Kubrick. Shiomiya scored victories over Mio Amaha 2993-1870 and Himari Takakura 2993-817. Kubrick took down Mayuri Shiina 2780-1847 and Miki Hoshii 2780-1230.

Super Sunday, March 25, is Match Day 7 of the 2012 International Saimoe League Phase II, or Match Day 13 of the entire Preliminary Period. Vote for your favorite candidates at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.

ISML 2012: Prelims II continue on and on and on...

By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 21, 2012

The 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries rolled on with Day 6 of Phase II, or Match Day 11 of the entire Preliminary Period.

In Nova Group 1, Elucia de Lute Irma defeated Yuuko Shionji 3070-2167 and Astarotte Ygvar 3070-1022. Misaki Ayuzawa defeated Sana Inui 2474-1872 and Poplar Taneshima 2474-1812. De Lute Irma will have a hard time figuring out Aria Holmes Kanzaki, who blew past Sora Kasugano 3031-2102 and Aoi Kunieda 3031-1212.

Stella Group 1 favorite Louise Francoise Le Blanc De La Valliere scored victories over Fuuko Ibuki 3039-2164 and Chii 3039-1268. Nymph took out Tsukasa Hiiragi 2912-2340 and Evangeline A.K. McDowell 2912-1150. Tsumugi Kotobuki, meanwhile, recorded wins over Lucy Heartfilia 3240-1848 and Suigintou 3240-1322.

Meiko Honma rolled past Sen Yarizui 2798-1862 and Ai Nanasaki 2798-1862. However, Honma is likely to wait until Phase III to have a shot at punching her ticket. Kurisu Makise, one of the two favorites in this group, took down Minami Shimada 2931-2305 and Tsurara Oikawa 2931-1189. The other favorite is Riko Mine, who shot down Aoi Yamada 3197-1820 and Yune 3197-1096.

Tipped by BoBA as the winner of Stella Group 2, Shinobu Oshino swallowed up Ami Kawashima 3348-1852 and Alice 3348-1241. Nagisa Furukawa scored victories over Yui Kotegawa 2985-2279 and Kallen Kozuki Stadtfeld 2985-1104. Kuroko Shirai wasted no time in dismantling Isumi Saginomiya 2920-2131 and Amu Hinamori 2920-1253.

ISML 2012: Preliminaries Phase II roll on

March 19, 2012

Match Day 10 of the 2012 International Saimoe League preliminaries, also known as Match Day 4 of Phase II of the prelims, took place on Sunday with the favorites emerging from the pack.

In Stella Group 5, Hecate defeated Ruiko Saten 2939-2507 and Kagura 2939-1263. Kagami Hiiragi thrashed Lala Satalin Deviluke 3161-2093 and Rena Ryuuguu 3161-1455. Both will have a hard time catching Yui Hirasawa, who rocked Minori Kushieda 3745-2222 and Rukia Kuchiki 3745-851.

Yuno Gasai slashed past Mami Tomoe 2696-2332 and Rin Kaga 2696-1543 in Nova Group 5. Also a big winner was Asami Iwasawa, who scored victories over Haruka L. Morishima 2948-1843 and Reki 2948-1814. The group favorite is Inori Yuzuriha, and with Guilty Crown concluding its run this week, she will look to take Nova 5 after scoring victories over Wendy Marvell 3480-1699 and Chihaya Kisaragi 3480-1173.

Mikuru Asahina recorded win over Tsubasa Hanekawa 3050-2236 and Suiseiseki 3050-1367 in Stella Group 6. Konjiki No Yami defeated both Ushio Okazaki 2791-2428 and Yomi Isayama 2791-1317. Group favorite Last Order kept her momentum going, winning matches over Maria 3470-2065 and Sawako Kuronuma 3470-1124.

Haqua De Lot Herminium rolled past Airi Sena 3197-1589 and Akari Akaza 3197-1480 in Nova Group 6. Ayase Shinomiya recorded win over Madoka Kaname 2896-2534 and Nano Shinonome 2896-1081. Group favorite Erio Towa blew past Kirika Ueno 3525-1727 and Nako Oshimizu 3525-1016.

In Stella Group 7, Ui Hirasawa dominated Kurimu Sakurano 3121-2273 and Ai Enma 3121-1244. Ikaros drubbed Rika Furude 3371-1836 and Kazari Uiharu 3371-1836. Group favorite  Illyasviel von Einzbern took out Sakura Kinomoto 3751-1956 and Shinku 3751-789.

When Illyasviel does well, so does her mother Irisviel who scored victories over Houki Shinonono 3164-2218 and Haruka Amami 3164-1027. Kanade Suzutsuki was a bit winner, taking out Kyouko Toshino 3107-1739 and Naruko Anjou 3107-1411. Kanon Nakagawa scored wins over Ohana Matsumae 2928-2017 and Sayaka Miki 2928-1560.

Mafuyu Shiina prevailed over Fate Testarossa 2367-2201 and Mai Kawasumi 2367-1611 in Stella Group 8. However, this could be a race between Kyou Fujibayashi and Holo. Fujibayashi scored victories over Kaori Kanzaki 3277-1874 and Kobato Hanato 3277-1421. Holo whipped past Shiki Ryogi 3521-1602 and Hinata Hyuuga 3521-1152.

ISML 2012: Preliminaries roll on

ISML 2012: Preliminaries roll on

By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 14, 2012

Match Day 8 of the 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries rolled on, with the usual suspects winning their matches.

In Stella 5, Hecate defeated Minori Kushieda 2961-2704 and Rena Ryuuguu 2961-1602. Kagami Hiiragi was another big winner, crushing Ruiko Satenm 3537-2716 and Ruki Kuchiki 3537-1122. The group favorite is Yui Hirasawa, who outlasted Lala Satalin Deviluke 4043-2081 and Kagura 4042-1262.

Meanwhile in Nova 5, the results are a bit more even. Yuno Gasai slashed past Wendy Marvell 3090-2005 and Haruka Morishima 3090-1941. Asami Iwasawa cruised past Japan champion Mami Tomoe 3388-2762 and Chihaya Kisaragi 3388-1155. The group favorite here is Inori Yuzuriha, who ran past Reiki 3583-1953 and Rin Kaga 3583-1588.

The usual faces did the work in Stella 6. Mikuru Asahina curbstomped Ushio Okazaki 3422-2545 and Sawako Kuronuma 3422-1249. Last Order, the favorite in this group, knocked down Tsubasa Hanekawa 3645-2010 and Yomi Isayama 3645-1580. Konjiki no Yami is hoping for an outside shot at a berth in Phase II, and she made her way past Maria 2993-2325 and Suiseiseki 2993-1645.

It was unfortunate that Erio Towa did not get the ascendancy in the first phase, but you can't count out the resiliency of the 2011 Anizone Best Moe runner-up. Towa leveled Akari Akaza 4291-1481 and Nano Shinonome 4291-1026. Haqua du Lot Herminium cruised past Ayase Shinomiya 3376-2323 and Nako Oshimizu 3376-1207. The Goddess, Madoka Kaname, flexed her muscles in victories over Kirika Ueno 3086-1998 and Airi Sena 3086-1914.

In Stella Group 7, favorite Illyasviel von Einzbern took out Rika  Furude 3936-1907 and Ai Enma 3936-1223. Ui Hirasawa scored victories over Sakura Kinomoto 3337-2358 and Kazari Uiharu 3337-1568. Ikaros flew past the competition in her match, soaring past Kurimu Sakurano 3617-2000 and Shinku 3617-1221.

Kanade Suzutsuki was all business in Nova Group 7, torching Ohana Matsumae 3285-2567 and Haruka Amami 3285-885. Kanon Nakagawa blew past Houki Shinonono 3097-2313 and Naruko Anjo 3097-1525. Group favorite Irisvil von Einzbern made it another sweep for the von Einzbern combine, trouncing Sayaka Miki 3508-1636 and Kyouko Toshino 3508-1921.

Three solid favorites have emerged from Stella Group 8. Kyou Fujibayashi crushed Fate Testarossa 3502-2611 and Hinata Hyuuga 3502-987. Mafuyu Shiina defeated Shiki Ryogi 3134-1882 and Kobato Hanato 3134-1691. Holo roared past Kaori Kanzaki 3249-2069 and Mai Kawasumi 3249-1807.

In Nova Group 8, three more favorite emerged from the pack. Subaru Konoe defeated Miu Amaha 3120-1926 and Miki Hoshii 3120-1471. Fear Kubrick edged Shirayuki Hotogi 2918-2792 and bulldozed her way past Himari Takakura 2918-1030. Shiori Shinomiya dismissed Mayuri Shiina 2961-2088 and Horizon Ariadust 2961-1830.

Match Day 9, Day 3 of Phase II of the 2012 International Saimoe League Preliminaries, is scheduled for Thursday, March 15, 2012. Vote for your favorite candidates at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.

GALAXY: Shield repeat? Ask EA Sports

ESPN.com: Soccer

Thursday, March 8, 2012GALAXY: Shield repeat? Ask EA Sports

How will the Galaxy fare in 2012? Better than 2011, says EA Sports.

At least during the regular season. L.A. posted a 22-3-9 record for 75 points -- best all-time -- in the gaming company's “FIFA Soccer 12” simulation of the coming Major League Soccer campaign.

EA Sports, which last year had the Galaxy winning the Supporters' Shield in its simulation (and the MLS Cup title in a further simulation), predicts a third straight Shield and fourth successive Western Conference regular-season crown despite some fierce opposition.

The simulation predicted Real Salt Lake, the Galaxy's foe in Saturday's MLS opener at Home Depot Center, would go 19-4-11 to finish second in the overall and Western standings. New York, at 18-7-0, won the Eastern Conference.

The Galaxy scored the most goals (62), fueled by Golden Boot winner Robbie Keane with 19, and despite Omar Gonzalez's knee injury conceded the fewest (21). Landon Donovan, one of three just Americans in the top 10, is the No. 4 goalscorer, with 15.

Chivas USA finished sixth in the West, out of the playoffs, with an 11-15-8 record, and were outscored, 51-41.

Here are the final standings from the simulation, which was released Thursday:

Hello, Harvard...

Tommy Amaker’s Dance step: Burn the floor
By Steve Buckley  |   Thursday, March 8, 2012  |

Tommy Amaker was wearing a crisp, fashionable houndstooth coat with a tight, black and white checkered pattern, and the fit was a tailor’s dream.
Amaker always dresses well, as most college basketball coaches do, but yesterday was an especially big day at Harvard University’s Lavietes Pavilion. The Crimson are headed for the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1946, making for what senior captain Oliver McNally called “a crazy day” as television stations, radio stations, newspapers and web sites sent representatives to cover this big story about how Harvard — yes, Harvard — is going to The Dance.
Perhaps you caught a glimpse of Amaker on television, looking dapper as he talked about how “special things are happening on a special campus,” and how proud he is that “Harvard, Cambridge, Greater Boston, and even all New England, if you will,” are getting caught up in the success of the Crimson basketball team.
What the cameras didn’t show is that Amaker, from the waist down, was dressed for work: Black sweats and a pair of dusty Nike sneakers. Soon the snap, crackle and pop of the media would be gone, and that’s when the impressive sports jacket would disappear and Amaker and his team would begin their first practice session since clinching a spot in the tournament.
Yes, the people at Harvard are thrilled with what’s happening with their men’s basketball team. Said Charlie Hobbs, a Harvard junior who works for campus radio station WHRB-FM: “Even with everything that goes on at Harvard, this is the most excited I’ve seen everybody in my three years here. People who aren’t really sports fans are excited about it.”
Well . . . of course. But this is no longer a campus story. It’s just what Amaker said it was, with fans outside the walls of Harvard Yard embracing the team. OK, well, maybe they’re not talking nonstop Harvard hoops at Malachy’s Saloon in Quincy and the Tavern on the Hill in Somerville, but you wait: If the Crimson make some noise in the first round, these guys are going to own, as Amaker put it, “Cambridge, Greater Boston, and even all New England, if you will.”
That’s where the sweats and the dusty sneakers play into this story. The challenge facing Amaker and his players is not to fall into that we’re-just-glad-to-be-here trap. They get it: It’s been a long, long time since Harvard has been in the tournament. So long ago, in fact, that Hizzoner James Michael Curley was mayor of Boston when Harvard was duking it out with NYU (winning 67-61) and Ohio State (losing 46-38) in March of ’46. So long ago that the Celtics [team stats]were nearly seven months away from playing their first game. So long ago that Johnny Pesky hadn’t even (allegedly) held the ball.
McNally, a 6-foot-3, 180-pound guard who has been busy this week writing a paper on “classical and defensive realism” for his American foreign policy class, said the team goal this season was not just to make the tournament, but “to get there and make a run. We don’t want to get this far and just lay an egg.”
As if to make his point, McNally talked about what happened last year, how the Crimson tied Princeton for the Ivy League title, with the two teams meeting at neutral-site Yale for a playoff game to determine which school would get to taste March Madness. Princeton won a 63-62 thriller on a buzzer-beater by Douglas Davis, who managed to escape pressure being applied by McNally.
“I guess the mature thing to say, looking back on it, is that it was a great experience,” he said. “But I’m a little stubborn about those things. I can’t see it that way. It left a scar.”
So, no, Harvard isn’t just happy to be there. That’s why yesterday was not about fancy blazers, but about sweats and the dusty sneakers.
Yes, they said all the right things yesterday. They smiled for the cameras. They did one-on-one’s with the TV people. Then we left, and the Crimson got down to the task of owning Boston.
