Sen. Charles Schumer on Donald Trump's acquittal

The case of Donald Trump's second impeachment trial was open and shut. President Trump told a lie -- a big lie -- that the election was stolen, and that he was the rightful winner. He laid the groundwork for this big lie in the months before the election, he told the big lie on election night, and he repeated the big lie more than 100 times in the weeks afterwards. He summoned his supporters to Washington, assembled them on the Ellipse, whipped them into a frenzy, and directed them at the Capitol.

And then he watched, as the violence unfolded, and the Capitol was breached, and his own Vice President fled for his life—and President Trump did nothing.

None of the facts were up for debate. We saw it. We heard it. We lived it. This was the first presidential impeachment trial in history in which all Senators were not only judges and jurors, but witnesses to the constitutional crime that was committed.

The former president inspired, directed, and propelled a mob to violently prevent the peaceful transfer of power, subvert the will of the people, and illegally keep that president in power.

There is nothing—nothing—more un-American than that.

There is nothing—nothing—more antithetical to our democracy.

There is nothing—nothing—more insulting to the generations of American patriots who gave their lives to defend our form of government.

This was the most egregious violation of the presidential oath of office and a textbook example—a classic example—of an impeachable offense, worthy of the Constitution's most severe remedy.

In response to the incontrovertible fact of Donald Trump's guilt, the Senate was subject to a feeble -- and sometimes incomprehensible -- defense of the former president. Unable to dispute the case on the merits, the former president's counsel treated us to partisan vitriol, false equivalence, and outright falsehoods.

We heard the roundly debunked jurisdictional argument that the Senate cannot try a former official, a position that would mean that any president could simply resign to avoid accountability for an impeachable offense. A position, which, in effect, would render the Senate powerless to ever enforce the disqualification clause in the Constitution. Essentially, the president's counsel told the Senate that the Constitution was unconstitutional. Thankfully, the Senate took a firm stance and set a firm precedent, with a bipartisan vote, in favor of our power to try former officials for acts they committed while in office.

We heard the preposterous claim that the former president's incitement to violence was protected by the First Amendment. The First Amendment right to free speech protects Americans from jail, not presidents from impeachment. If a president had said, during WWII, that "Germany should attack the United States on Long Island, we've left it undefended" -- I suspect Congress would have considered that an impeachable offense!

Finally, the defense counsel said that President Trump was not directly responsible for the violence at the Capitol. "His words were merely metaphor, his directions were merely suggestions, and that the violent mob was just a spontaneous demonstration." But wind the clock back and ask yourself: if at any point, Donald Trump did not do the things that he did, would the attack on the Capitol have happened? There is only one answer to that question. Of course not.

If President Trump hadn't told his supporters to march towards the Capitol; if he hadn't implored them to come to Washington on January 6 in the first place; if he hadn't repeatedly lied to them that the election was stolen and that their country was being taken from them; the attack would not have happened, could not have happened. January 6th would not have happened but for the actions of Donald Trump.

Here's what the Republican leader of the Senate said: the mob that perpetrated the "failed insurrection" was on January 6th "was provoked by President Trump."

You want another word for "provoke?" How about: "incite."

Still—still!—the vast majority of the Senate Republican caucus, including the Republican leader, voted to acquit former President Trump, signing their names in the columns of History alongside his name—forever.

January 6th will live as a day of infamy in the history of the United States of America. The failure to convict Donald Trump will live as a vote of infamy in the history of the United States Senate.

Five years ago, Republican Senators lamented what might become of their party if Donald Trump became their presidential nominee and standard-bearer. Just look at what has happened. Look at what Republicans have been forced to defend. Look at what Republicans have chosen to forgive. The former president tried to overturn the results of a legitimate election—and provoked an assault on our own government—and well over half of the Senate Republican conference decided to condone it.

The most despicable act that any president has ever committed and the majority of Republicans cannot summon the courage or the morality to condemn it.

This trial wasn't even about choosing country over party, even not that. This was about choosing country over Donald Trump. And 43 Republican members chose Trump. They chose Trump. It should be a weight on their conscience today. And it shall be a weight upon their conscience in the future.

As sad as that fact is, as condemnable as the decision was, it is still true that the final vote on Donald Trump's conviction was the largest and most bipartisan vote of any presidential impeachment trial in American history. I salute those Republican patriots who did the right thing. It wasn't easy. We know that. Let their votes be a message to the American people.

Because, my fellow Americans: if this nation is going to long endure, we, as a people, cannot sanction the former president's conduct.

Because if lying about the results of an election is acceptable, if instigating a mob against the government is considered permissible, if encouraging political violence becomes the norm, it will be open season, open season, on our democracy; and everything will be up for grabs by whoever has the biggest clubs, the sharpest spears, the most powerful guns.

By not recognizing the heinous crime that Donald Trump committed against the Constitution; Republican Senators have not only risked but potentially invited the same danger that was just visited upon us.

So let me say this: despite the results of the vote on Donald Trump's conviction in the court of impeachment, he deserves to be convicted—and I believe he will be convicted—in the court of public opinion.

He deserves to be permanently discredited—and I believe he has been discredited—in the eyes of the American people and in the judgment of History.

Even though Republican Senators prevented the Senate from disqualifying Donald Trump from any office of honor, trust, or profit under these United States, there is no question that Donald Trump has disqualified himself.

I hope, I pray, and I believe that the American people will make sure of that.

And if Donald Trump ever stands for public office again, and after everything we have seen this week: I hope, I pray, and I believe that he will meet the unambiguous rejection by the American people.

Six hours after the attack on January 6th, after the carnage and mayhem was shown on every television screen in America, President Trump told his supporters to "remember this day forever." I ask the American people to heed his words: remember that day forever. But not for the reasons the former president intended.

Remember the panic in the voices over the radio dispatch; the rhythmic pounding of fists and flags at the chamber doors.

Remember the crack of the solitary gunshot.

Remember the hateful and racist Confederate Flag flying through the halls of our Union.

Remember the screams of the bloodied officer crushed between the onrushing mob and a doorway to the Capitol, his body trapped in the breach.

Remember the three Capitol Police Officers who lost their lives.

Remember that those rioters actually succeeded in delaying Congress from certifying the election.

Remember how close our democracy came to ruin.

My fellow Americans: remember that day, January 6th, forever—the final, terrible legacy of the 45th President of the United States and undoubtedly our worst.

Let it live on in infamy, a stain on Donald John Trump that can never, never be washed away.

On Monday, we'll recognize Presidents' Day. Part of the commemoration in the Senate will be the annual reading of Washington's Farewell Address. Aside from winning the Revolutionary War, I consider it his greatest contribution to American civic life. And it had nothing to do with the words he spoke but the example it set. Washington's Farewell Address established for all time that no one had the right to the office of the presidency, that it belonged to the people.

What an amazing legacy. What an amazing gift to the future generations: the knowledge that this country will always be greater than any one person, even our most renowned. That's why members of both parties take turns reading Washington's address, once a year, in full, into the record—to pledge common attachment to the selflessness at the core of our democratic system.

This trial was about the final acts of a president who represents the very antithesis of our first president, and sought to place one man before the entire country—himself.

Let the record show, let the record show, before God, History, and the solemn oath we swear to the Constitution, that there was only one correct verdict in this trial: guilty. And I pray that while justice was not done in this trial, it will be carried forward by the American people, who above any of us in this chamber, determine the destiny of our great nation.

Yukino Yukinoshita: 2020 ISML Heavenly Tiara Winner/Saimoe Prime Minister

Good evening to all of you, or morning, or afternoon, wherever you are in the world. My name is Yukino Yukinoshita, and I will be your Saimoe Prime Minister for the 2021 campaign. Miyuki Shirogane will be assisting me as Deputy Saimoe Prime Minister, and we have immediately taken over for Violet Evergarden and Rimuru Tempest by issuing this address via Zoom. I want to start by thanking Violet and Rimuru for their services last year and in particular Violet for writing what has been a very tough story for the world to read, one that Miyuki and I intend to finish, or no.

My cabinet will consist of Yui Yuigahama, Iroha Isshiki, Saika Totsuka and my older sister Haruno. They will be my primary counsel related to any executive actions I needed to make. As for Miyuki, he has his own personal counsel of Kaguya Shinomiya, Ai Hayasaka, Chika Fujiwara and Yuu Ishigami, with Miko Iino and Miyuki's sister Kei to also help with his own matters.

For those of you who voted for Mikoto and for Sakuta Azusagawa (who, for the second straight time, sees a final defeat), I understand your loss and Miyuki and I plan to help you the best way we can. Our two teams would like to personally salute Mikoto Misaka, a longtime servant of Saimoe, and a hero and inspiration to us all. We hope to see her again in the hunt as well as the new encouters she will have in what has been a rich, fruitful journey of adventure.

When Miyuki and I first heard of the news that we had both won out respective races, all of us that I mentioned had a special videoconference meeting to discuss a plan that we needed to implement and enforce not just to Japan, but to the world. It was clear that the first item of business was to end the coronavirus pandemic, or at least manage it to a state where people could recover and go on with their lives.

And so I made it clear that the first item is to encourage all citizens, young and old: GO GET VACCINATED. The vaccines are out to help people get back to working, to get back to living the livelihoods they lost. So many people in this world have been lost to COVID-19, that I feel that we all need to come together and take the initiative in fighting this. Our turn will come, we will get out shots, and we will come back stronger than ever, and I believe all who vote in the International Saimoe League need to do the same. Do you part, get vaccinated, and get back to doing your thing. We will do ours.

Secondly, the great city of Tokyo is due to host the Olympics this summer. And I believe all who will be in the ISML, the Saimoe Parliament, this coming campaign need to get the word out that the Olympics must take place, that all need to play their role in being safe, taking precautions, not getting infected or at least getting vaccinated prior, and then putting on a show that is for the world to see. I love this city, and I am sure you do too. Miyuki does, my husband Hachiman (a former Deputy VP) does, everyone who is a part of this whole process defends the legacy of Tokyo, Japan to the grave. The Games must take place, and it will. So let's make it happen.

And finally, the third major issue I have is the current state of the United States of America. I have called Mrs. Caroline Kennedy on their current issue regarding one of their former leaders and have been in dialogue regarding the direction of America, who I still believe can find their way. We plan to work with our American voters in keeping the dream alive and keeping the fire burning because as they continue to heal, America will continue to recover and we here in Japan hope they will do just that.

In addition to the three main topics suggested, I plan to work the with new government on other issues pertaining to the Saimoe movement as well as do my obligations to assisting the Imperial household and the youth of the household. Her Royal Highness Aiko, Princess Toshi has been personally expecting my presence as well as Miyuki's so for the two of us, this will be a unique experience so we plan to do our best. We hope she looks forward to us being their for her.

To the whole world, it's time. We must face reality with eyes forward and no regrets, at the same time being cautiously optimistic that fortune shall smile on those who believe in us and what we can do to bring happiness to everyone we love. With your support in the Saimoe movement, we can bring an end to the pandemic, we will bring the Games to Tokyo and keep the fire burning, and we will see America be a realm reborn, and even further beyond.

So rise up, stand together, never be afraid and be ready to lead. As the French saying goes, "Ensemble on va le faire." Together, we will win.

Thank you, may God bless you, and may god bless Japan and the world. Good night.

Bayern Munich: 2020 FIFA Club World Cup Champions

Bayern Munich’s love affair with French players dates back to the mid-90s with the arrival of Jean-Pierre Papin. Nascent Franco-Bavarian ties were further strengthened during the 2000s, when Bixente Lizarazu, Willy Sagnol and Franck Ribery all followed in his footsteps.

Today, the relationship is at its zenith with no fewer than six Frenchmen plying their trade for the European champions.

On 11 February, the club’s Gallic flair was again in evidence in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup Qatar 2020™. The UEFA Champions League winners saw off the challenge of Mexico’s Tigres UNAL with a goal from Benjamin Pavard, just one of five Franzosens on the Bavarians' team sheet. Bayern appear to be in seventh heaven with their Bleus, as these stats can attest.

Not content with picking winner’s medals at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia™, Frenchmen Corentin Tolisso, Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard can now add the title of club world champions to their resumes. That means the trio are current holders of seven titles, having also tasted success in the 2020 editions of the UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga, DFB Cup, UEFA Super Cup and DFL Supercup.

The record number of Frenchmen who have lined up for Bayern in this season’s Bundesliga. And while Michael Cuisance, who took part in their opening game against Schalke, subsequently moved to Marseille, that still leaves in order of arrival at the club: Kingsley Coman(2015),Corentin Tolisso (2017),Benjamin Pavard (2019), Lucas Hernandez (2019), Tanguy Kouassi (2020) and Bouna Sarr (2020).

In scoring the only goal of the Qatar 2020 final, Benjamin Pavard became the seventh French player to register a goal in this competition, after Nicolas Anelka, Jonathan Biabiany, Franck Ribery, Karim Benzema, Bafetimbi Gomis and Andre-Pierre Gignac.

7: Franck Ribery's shirt number at Bayern. He spent 12 years there and won nine league titles, setting a new record for a foreign player. A veritable club icon after racking up 119 goals and 185 assists in 425 games, the Boulogne native was even given a nickname steeped in Bayern history: Kaiser Franck – a reference to the legendary Bayern and West Germany defender Franz Beckenbauer.

7: The number of goals scored for the club by Bixente Lizarazu, another Bayern legend. The left-back enjoyed his best years in Bavaria, where he won absolutely everything. He stayed there for eight seasons in all, as did compatriot Willy Sagnol, another wingback and Bayern favourite. Such was the precision of Sagnol’s deliveries from out wide that he earned the nickname Flankengott, meaning ‘god of the crosses’.

7: The number of matches played in his maiden season by the first Frenchman to join the Bavarian club: Jean-Pierre Papin. A modest total unquestionably, but the striker had more than his share of injuries during this time. That said, JPP will always be the one who paved the way for his compatriots – 13 others to date – to don the famous red jersey.

7: The number of years that Valerien Ismael had to wait to become a naturalised German. Ignored by the France national team, he made the request in 2006 in the hope of participating in that year’s World Cup for Die Mannschaft. It was not to be, however. The former Bayern defender, who scored two goals in 46 appearances between 2005 and 2007, finally obtained German citizenship in 2013.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Super Bowl LV Champions

Grand hopes for the Kansas City Chiefs of becoming the NFL's next dynasty were expunged emphatically by the one-man dynasty known as Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. A slow start for both squads transitioned to Brady and Todd Bowles' Bucs defense dominating Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in the latter's bid for a title repeat. Brady threw for three touchdowns and the Bucs' pass rush stymied Mahomes as the Buccaneers defeated the Chiefs, 31-9, on Sunday in Super Bowl LV at Tampa's Raymond James Stadium. The Buccaneers became the first team to win a Super Bowl in their host stadium and Brady brought home his seventh Super Bowl title in his first season with Tampa Bay after six title runs with the New England Patriots.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31, Kansas City Chiefs 9

1) The Greatest Of All Time wrote another chapter in his legendary career. Tom Brady won his seventh Super Bowl and fifth SB MVP award. TB12 connected with his old New England buddy, Rob Gronkowski, for two first-half TDs as the Bucs sprinted out to a double-digit lead they'd never relinquish. Behind a dominant offensive line, Brady was comfortable start to finish, getting the ball out quick and taking shots when needed. The 43-year-old completed 21-of-29 passes for 201 yards and three first-half touchdowns. Gronk, who unretired to join Brady for another Super Bowl run, exploded, gashing the Chiefs up the seam time and time again. The TE led the Bucs with six caches for 67 yards and the two TDs. Gronk's best two games this season came against K.C. (6/106 in Week 12). With Mike Evans (1/31) and Chris Godwin (2/9) slowed, it was Gronk that carried the passing load. The future Hall of Fame TE returned to chase a fourth Super Bowl ring. In the biggest game of the year, Gronk stole the spotlight. After a slow start to the season, the Bucs gelled down the stretch, as Brady teams often do. Winning three road playoff games earned the Bucs the chance to play a home Super Bowl game. In front of those home fans, the Bucs lifted their second franchise Lombardi Trophy.

2) Todd Bowles was the true MVP of Super Bowl LV. The Buccaneers defensive coordinator called a masterful game that had Patrick Mahomes scrambling for his life, holding the ball, and gave the Chiefs no deep shots. Bowles dropped safeties deep to negate Tyreek Hill's speed and funnel everything underneath. The Bucs were ready for Andy Reid's normal counter, sniffing out every screen K.C. tried. Devin White was a menace, discombobulating every snap. Lavonte David helped smother Travis Kelce. Blanketing the field deep, not allowing a completion of 20-plus air yards to an offense that feasts off such plays, the Bucs controlled the game. The most dominant aspect of the game came from Tampa's defensive front, which throttled an injured Chiefs O-line. The Bucs often were through the line a second after the snap, causing Mahomes to retreat on first step. Tampa destroyed backup Chiefs offensive tackles with Shaquil Barrett constantly in Mahomes' face. The Bucs pressured Mahomes on 32.7% of his snaps while only blitzing on five snaps, per Next Gen Stats. The Bucs held Mahomes to 114 yards through three quarters and kept the Chiefs out of the end zone, earning two INTs of the star QB. It was as thorough a beating as Mahomes has experienced, and the first double-digit loss of his NFL career.

3) The Chiefs offensive line struggled brutally. We knew entering with backup tackles on both the left and right sides would make life difficult on Mahomes. The extent to which they struggled, particularly Mike Remmers on the left side, can't be overstated. Mahomes was running for his life all game, needing a Herculean effort just to get the ball out. Some of the best plays of the game came from the Chiefs QB scrambling for his life to heave prayers that fell incomplete. Even the brilliance of Mahomes couldn't overcome the offensive line issues Sunday. Mahomes was forced to scramble on 28.6% of his snaps, per NGS, completing just five of 14 throws with an INT on such plays. Even when the QB appeared to have time, it was clear he didn't trust it would last long enough to sit tight in the pocket. It's the latest reminder that even with speed, talent and weapons for days, football is still a game won in the trenches.

4) While the K.C. offensive line struggled, the Bucs' hogs dictated the contest from start to finish. The Tampa offensive line opened up holes for a churning rushing attack that milked the clock late and allowed Leonard Fournette to scamper untouched to the end zone. Ryan Jensen, Tristan Wirfs, Ali Marpet, Donovan Smith and Aaron Stinnie deserve praise for controlling the contest. Brady was sacked midway through the first quarter. The Chiefs rush barely touched him from thereon. When K.C. tried to dial up pressure, it was for naught, as the Bucs blockers, occasionally with help from Gronk, sealed the pocket. Brady was sacked just once and hit twice the entire game. The Bucs gave up pressure on just four snaps, per Next Gen Stats (compare that to Mahomes under pressure on 14 snaps). When the GOAT is given that sort of time, he's free to thrash the defense.

ISML 2020: Mikoto Misaka Nears History In The Making

ISML 2020: Mikoto Misaka Nears History In The Making

By Jo-Ryan Salazar

The Bedlam On Baltic Avenue

February 7, 2021

Mikoto Misaka, who last served as Saimoe Prime Minister in 2011 and has been, on numerous occassions, named Saimoe Leader of the Free World, is tipped by the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue to win a historic second term after defeating Kaguya Shinomiya 7995-7651. However, her opponent is hoping to emulate Hachiman Hikigaya in leading the OreGaIru Party to glory, and that is Hachiman's wife Yukino Yukinoshita, who defeated Mai Sakurajima 7960-6813.

The vanquished's male counterparts, however, will get a chance to be named Deputy Saimoe Prime Minister. Miyuki Shirogane is projected to give the Kaguya Party convincing clout after demolishing Yuu Ishigami 8107-5307. However, Sakuta Azusagawa lost his initial attempt at winning the seat last year to Rimuru Tempest and will hope that it isn't same song, second verse after delivering a 7474-6540 statement win over Touma Kamijou. S.O.S. - Cream Version

Sleepless nights, I'm lying awake

Heaven up off to whiskey and you

Lusting love, I have it to break

I don't have what it takes, to get through

So I tried to call you, on the telephone

I'm waiting for others although that is wrong

And I know us like, to be lusting tonight

On a real romance, give me just one more chance

I'm sending an S.O.S.

A love that is straight to your heart

I'm sending an S.O.S.

Sinking and falling apart

Deja vu, can't take anymore

Lying twisted and marooned by love

Can't deny, is our love true?

Like a drug man can't get enough!

I'm sending an S.O.S.

A love that's straight to your heart

I'm sending an S.O.S.

Sinking and falling apart

So I tried to call you, on the telephone

I'm waiting for others although that is wrong

And I know us like, to be lusting tonight

On a real romance, give me just one more chance

I'm sending an S.O.S.

A love that is straight to your heart

I'm sending an S.O.S.

Sinking and falling apart

I'm sending an S.O.S.

A love that's straight to your heart

I'm sending an S.O.S.

Sinking and falling apart!

ISML 2020: Elaina Wins Speaker Of The Saimoe Diet Seat

ISML 2020: Elaina Wins Speaker Of The Saimoe Diet Seat

By Jo-Ryan Salazar

The Bedlam On Baltic Avenue

February 3, 2021

In a spread-busting Upset of the Round, Elaina, the Wandering Witch, is your 2021 Speaker of the Saimoe Diet after defeating Kei Shirogane 6656-5390 in the 2020 International Saimoe League Seasonal Final. The result deals a crippling blow to the Kaguya Party's vain aspirations of being the party in power at next year's Saimoe Diet. However, Elaina's progressive agenda has resonated well with voters and will also make her a strong contender at next year's International Saimoe League. Elaina succeeds Kaguya Shinomiya as Speaker.

Yukino Yukinoshita defeated Asuna Yuuki 6601-5482 to advance, while Mai Sakurajima delivered a 5914-5768 statement win over Mashiro Shiina that could give the Bunny Girl a free pass to the General Election for Saimoe Prime Minister and the Heavenly Tiara, though Yukino's dark horse mystique holds sway. Miyuki Shirogane is hoping to join Kaguya Shinomiya at the top of the line after belting Kazuma Satou 7205-4087 and faces a straightforward assignment in Yuu Ishigami, who delivered a 6602-4937 stonewalling of Riku Dola.

Tsukasa Yuzaki finished second in the Fall Seasonal defeating Rize Tedeza 5603-3470. Saya was third with 2466 votes and Sakura Adachi was fourth with 1642 votes. Saya has been enlisted as Elaina's personal assistant, in which she will document all actions done as Speaker of the Saimoe Diet and be a personal liaison to important people on her travels.

In Tiara Consolation action, Rikka Takanashi won the closest race of the round, a 5733-5691 thriller over Iroha Isshiki, Chika Fujiwara crushed Shiro 6114-5270, Misaki Shokuhou defeated Kuroko Shirai 5354-5063, Emilia raced past Yui Yuigahama 6015-5403, Kurumi Tokisaki shot down Kaede Azusagawa 6164-4849, Megumin exploded past Chino Kafuu 5636-5309, Nao Tomori thumped Ruiko Saten 6144-4968 and Utaha Kasumigaoka won a 5416-5377 barnburner over Mio Akiyama.

In Scepter Consolation action, Ryuuji Takasu roared past Kiritsugu Emiya 5161-4538, Taki Tachibana took down Yuuta Togashi 5217-5134, Tanjiro Kamado won the closest race of the round, a 4890-4854 snoozer over Saitama, Levi leveled Kiyotaka Ayanokouji 5658-4671, Saika Totsuka rolled past Lelouch Lamperouge 5618-4676, Tomoya Okazaki defeated Shirou Emiya 4856-4486, Sorata Kanda impaled Gilgamesh 5556-4587 and Archer prevailed over Yuzuru Otonashi 5091-4936.

In exhibition action, Ayumu Uehara routed Tiara 4554-2923, Setsuna Yuuki defeated Misha Necron 4381-3924, Ryouko Kuriba rolled past Nana Hiiragi 5049-3777 and Misha's sister Sasha dusted off Rika Furude 4575-3945.

Making the cut in one group match were Suzune Horikita (46638.9), Kuroyukihime (40169.3) and Chitoge Kirisaki (41416.8). In another group match, Saten (5438) and Nanami Aoyama (5496) made the cut, which made up for Ruiko's setback against Tomori.

Match Day 7 of the 2020 International Saimoe League is scheduled for February 4, 2021 and will be a prelude to the general election on Match Day 8 to close out another rock-solid year of Saimoe. Vote for your favorite characters at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.
