Winnipeg Blue Bombers: 2019 Grey Cup Champions

CALGARY — The CFL’s longest championship drought is over, as Winnipeg native Andrew Harris scored twice and Justin Medlock kicked six field goals to lead the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to a 33-12 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the 107th Grey Cup presented by Shaw.

Four-time Grammy Award winner Keith Urban rocked a McMahon Stadium gathering of 35,439 at halftime on Sunday night, while Harris set a Bombers Grey Cup record with 134 rushing yards to lead Winnipeg to its first Grey Cup since 1990. Harris became the first Blue Bomber to rush for more than 100 yards in a Grey Cup in 61 years, and only the second in franchise history.

Defensive end Willie Jefferson had three of the Bombers’ six sacks on Ticats quarterback Dane Evans, forcing two fumbles as part of a seven turnover night for the Winnipeg defence. Hamilton, meanwhile, lost Most Outstanding Player Brandon Banks to an apparent leg injury in the third quarter.

Harris opened the scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run off an Adam Bighill fumble recovery, and later hauled in an 18-yard pass from Chris Streveler to give Winnipeg a 17-6 lead in the second quarter that would not be relinquished. The Bombers’ running back was named Grey Cup Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Canadian, becoming the first in CFL history to win both honours.

Bombers starting quarterback Zach Collaros had a clean game, finishing 17-of-23 for 170 yards, while Streveler completed all three of his passing attempts for 39 yards and a touchdown. Kenny Lawler led the Bombers with 52 yards on three catches.

Tyrell Sutton rushed for 86 yards on 11 carries for the Ticats, who also had a strong effort from Jaelon Acklin with his game-high 88 yards on five catches. In the first Grey Cup start of his career, Evans threw for 203 yards on 16-of-27 passing for the Ticats with one touchdown and two interceptions. Bralon Addison scored the Ticats’ lone touchdown.

Flamengo: 2019 Copa Libertadores Champions

No photo description available.

Gabriel Barbosa scored twice in a dramatic final five minutes as Flamengo came from a goal down to beat River Plate and win their first Copa Libertadores title since 1981.

The Brazilian giants were second best for much of the match after Rafael Santos Borre swept home from Matias Suarez's pull-back in the 14th minute to the delight of the River fans inside the 80,000-capacity Estadio Monumental in Lima.

No photo description available.

The 24-year-old Colombian was then inches away from making it 2-0 with a sweet strike from 25 yards out.

Flamengo's best chances of an equaliser came in the space of a few seconds when Barbosa had a shot blocked and Everton Ribeiro's follow up was well held by keeper Franco Armani.

But then came the late fightback that turned the final on its head.

No photo description available.

First, Barbosa timed his run to perfection to run in Bruno Henrique's square ball, and then the striker on loan from Inter Milan twisted and turned the defence in the penalty box to slot in a 92nd-minute winner.

There was still time for two red cards in the final few seconds, with Exequiel Palacios sent off for kicking Bruno Henrique while he was on the ground before Flamengo's two-goal hero was sent off for sarcastic applause.

The final of South America's biggest club football competition, which started life in 1960, was moved from Santiago to the Peruvian city because of social unrest in Chile's capital.

No photo description available.

This was the first time since 1988 that the tournament was decided in a one-off game.

Supporters from both sides occupied its streets in their thousands before the match, with reports stating some River fans travelled the 2,500 miles from Buenos Aires to Lima by buses provided by the club.

Flamengo have now qualified for the 2019 Fifa Club World Cup in Qatar and could face European champions Liverpool if they both reach the final on 21 December.

South Africa: 2019 Rugby World Cup Champions

YOKOHAMA, 2 Nov - Fly-half Handre Pollard kicked a record 22 points to allow Siya Kolisi, the first black captain of South Africa, to lift the Rugby World Cup after a comprehensive defeat of England at International Stadium Yokohama.

Brilliant second-half tries from wingers Makazole Mapimpi and Cheslin Kolbe allowed the Springboks to win a third Rugby World Cup, punishing an error-ridden England performance.

Eddie Jones's team were given a lesson in power scrummaging in the first half. The Springboks took away England’s set-piece with a clinical performance that allowed the majestic Pollard to keep the scoreboard ticking over. He became the record Springboks points scorer in a Rugby World Cup final, and the top scorer at RWC 2019 with 69.

England were kept in the match by captain Owen Farrell’s four penalties but they could not repeat the form that had helped them to topple reigning champions New Zealand in the semi-finals. The result means the Springboks - who had never scored a try in their previous two Rugby World Cup final triumphs in 1995 and 2007 - are now the No.1 team in the world.

Jones's men made the worst possible start when prop Kyle Sinckler was knocked out in the second minute in making a tackle, having made contact with team-mate Maro Itoje. Dan Cole was thrown into the fray much earlier than expected and he spent the next six minutes trying to repel repeated Springbok attacks that eventually yielded a penalty for Pollard, as the England defence held out under intense pressure.

England were making numerous unforced handling errors trying to be too expansive off poorly set-up possession, and the scrum was being put into reverse by strong Springbok pressure. It took cool work under the high ball to bring some order to the England chaos with Anthony Watson proving to be a rock in an otherwise shaky defence. Jonny May tried to put pace into a  stuttering attack and also defused another high kick under pressure, finally allowing Owen Farrell to move his team deep inside South Africa territory.

England finally stabilised a scrum and with Billy and Mako Vunipola carrying strongly, Farrell was able to kick a penalty and tie the scores.

South Africa lost hooker Mbongeni Mbonambi to a head injury and also lock Lood de Jager to an arm injury, sending on Malcolm Marx at No.2 and second-row Franco Mostert as the game really started to take a toll on the players. Another poor England scrum led to a Pollard penalty, after which England turned on the power and had their best few minutes of the first half.

They repeatedly surged at the Springbok line only to be repulsed every time, and the same happened when the ball moved wide. Farrell eventually kicked a penalty that tied the game again at 6-6 when he and his team had hoped for more. England's frustration increased as side entry at a ruck handed Pollard a third penalty, and he kicked a fourth to end the half as the scrum was penalised yet again.

That made it 12-6 to South Africa at the break and the omens looked bad for England. No team had ever recovered from a half-time deficit to win a Rugby World Cup final - and they never looked like being the first to do so.

England sent on the heavier George Kruis for Courtney Lawes to try to shore up the scrum at half-time and the Springboks responded by changing both props. The Boks continued to dominate, winning another penalty that Pollard kicked from near halfway to trigger a change at loosehead for England with Joe Marler replacing Mako Vunipola. Straight away referee Jerome Garces found more fault with the England front-row, who apparently could not get out of reverse gear.

At the next scrum they finally fragmented the Springbok scrum but Farrell, who had moved to No.10 after Henry Slade replaced George Ford, missed the penalty. That miss was compounded by an offside ruling against Manu Tuilagi which allowed Pollard a sixth penalty success. Both teams could not stop offending and Marx came in from the side at the restart allowing Farrell to cut the deficit to six points at 18-12.

That, though, would be the end of England's scoring.

Just when it appeared to be a third straight final of kicked points for South Africa, they put 14 more points on the board with converted tries by Mapimpi and Kolbe on left and right wings respectively. Mapimpi, above, started and finished the crucial try with the help of centre Lukhanyo Am, then came a typically brilliant individual try from Kolbe, bottom.

Duane Vermeulen stood out in South Africa's outstanding defence and was named Player of the Match.

Farrell said at the finish that he was proud of his team's effort but added: "Credit to South Africa. they were very good today."
