Hawthorn Hawks: 2013 AFL Minor Premiers
Forget Buddy's big decision. This weekend is all about the Buddy bump after Hawthorn superstar Lance Franklin put his AFL finals campaign in jeopardy during Friday night's 12-point win over Sydney at ANZ Stadium.
The 17.10 (112) to 16.4 (100) victory ensured the Hawks will finish atop the ladder and host the Swans in a qualifying final next Friday night at the MCG.
Jarryd Roughead kicked four goals to put one hand on the Coleman medal and Sam Mitchell was at his indomitable best, but in terms of next month nothing mattered more than a single undisciplined act from Franklin.
There's every chance the talented 26-year-old will be suspended for at least one match after being reported for making contact with Nick Malceski's head in the second quarter.
A 2012 rule change means the key forward has no carry over points despite being suspended seven times, but his bump was late and came after Malceski kicked the ball.
Several Swans rushed to remonstrate with Franklin, who is believed to be weighing up a $10-12 million Greater Western Sydney offer and has put contract talks on hold until the end of the season.
Malceski left the field groggy and was substituted out of the game in the final quarter.
The Swans' medical report will help shape the verdict of the match review panel, who face a tough ask in determining if the bump was negligent or reckless.
Regardless, Franklin's actions were unnecessary and came over two years after he vowed to wipe the bump from his repertoire.
'I've just got to take it out of my game. I'm missing games because of that,' Franklin said of his 2011 one-match suspension for a high bump on Gold Coast's Maverick Weller.
Franklin kicked two goals on Friday night, with Roughead starring in the visitors' come-from-behind win.
Roughead now has 68 goals for the season, with second-placed Travis Cloke now seven behind on the AFL's goal-kicking table.
Sydney led for most of the night after Jesse White kicked the game's opening goal, and were up by 26 points in the second quarter.
Fittingly, it was Roughead who finally gave the Hawks the lead in the third minute of the final term when he popped through his third goal.
The reigning premiers, who will enter September with one win from their past four starts, fought hard in the final term but never recovered from the Hawks' final-quarter blitz of five goals in 13 minutes.
The undermanned Swans, minus nine of their premiership 22 from last year's grand final between the two sides, were further weakened by the late withdrawal of star recruit Kurt Tippett due to a tight hamstring.

ISML 2013: Mashiro cruises to Topaz
ISML 2013: Mashiro cruises to Topaz
Shiina easily wins Necklace match, Kurisu Makise wins Earrings
By JR Salazar
The Bedlam on Baltic Avenue
August 23, 2013
At Suimei Academy of the Arts, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were singing the theme song of Mashiro Shiina's ISML campaign, "Can't Hold Us" prior to the ISML annoucement, scheduled for 1 p.m. Japan Standard Time. Shiina's supporters were waving campaign flags, dressed in the colors of Suimei. The fans were bouncing up and down to the theme song, energized.
"She can't be denied this time!" said a devoted Shiina fan in her 30's, dressed like a mochi ball. "She will win! Mashiro to win!"
"It's her time. Nothing can stop her now," said another fan, a woman in her 60's using a walker. "The young lady will win the Topaz and make everyone here proud. This is it!"
"We think she is going to crush Mikoto today," said another fan, a female student from Suimei cosplaying as Reimu Hakurei. The fan, apparently, was Nanami Aoyama, Mashiro's No. 1 confidante. "I expect it. This will be a formality."
Indeed, the announcement was made. Shiina won 3118 votes, or 27.92% of the vote, to earn a score calculation of 65.382. Not only did she dominate the Necklace Match, her SDO was too much for the competition to handle.
"Finally!" Mashiro exclaimed, to the roar of the crowd, tears coming out of her eyes. "How about that, everybody! You know, this means a lot to me, to finally win my first ISML necklace, and finish the regular season without a defeat...this is truly a dream come true and I don't want this to end.
"I want to thank my significant other, the love of my life, Sorata Kanda, for standing up for me and supporting me all year and being there for me since I first laid my eyes on him and fell in love with him. I want to thank my good friend Nanami Aoyama for believing in me and all of us and being someone I can also rely on.
"I want to thank Ryuunosuke Akasaka, Misaki Kamigusa, Rita Ainswork, Jin Mitaka and Chihiro Sengoku for their efforts in helping both of our campaigns, both mine's and Nanami's. And I finally want to salute you, the voters, for being our rock all season. Neither of us could have made it to the postseason without you. Give yourselves a hand.
"Now that the regular season is over, I look forward to your support of us during this International Saimoe League postseason. Wish us well and don't forget to vote for us. We love you, we couldn't make it this far without you, and we're only getting started! Thank you, everybody!"
"We were in a no-win situation," said Misaka, who had 2511 votes (22.49%) for a necklace score calculation of 44.104. "But, that's the way things go nowadays. Hopefully I can do better in the postseason. I will also focus on putting on a strong showing in Japan."
Eucliwood Hellscythe won 1930 votes (17.28%) for a necklace score calculation of 48.603. "I don't think Mashiro was going to be denied her necklace," said Hellscythe through interpreter Ayumu Aikawa at her press conference. "We will take this on the chin and prepare for the Division Finals."
Taiga Aisaka earned 1560 votes (13.97%) for a score calculation of 41.684. "I've won the Topaz before so it's nice to see someone else win it," Aisaka said. "I gave it my best effort, but the best of the new faces are getting the job done, and Mashiro is one tough cookie to crumble."
Kuroyukihime earned 789 votes (7.07%) for a necklace score calculation of 23.964. "This is coming off the heels of being consigned to the repechage by Fate Testarossa in 2channel AST," said Hime at her press conference in Tokyo. "This definitely was not a good day for me. One of the lowest days for me personally because my assumption was that Testarossa's time had passed. I will hope to rebound in the Division Finals, but I cannot be happy with how I performed in my two contests today."
Kirino Kousaka had 652 votes (5.84%) for a score calculation of 30.040. "Being in these necklace matches is kind of unnecessary for me because I know that I don't have the pedigree to put up much of a fight," Kousaka said at her press conference. "I kind of expected this result because this was really all about Mashiro winning something. No one else in this period mattered other than her."
Kobato Hasegawa won 607 votes (5.44%) for a score calculation of 27.260. "It's nice to be in this thing, but only if the voters think I deserve to win something," Hasegawa said. "I think this is going to be another average year for me, and I have high standards. So, I'm kinda unhappy that they decided that this was going to be about that nobody from Sakurasou. This was gifted to her by the voters. They put a ribbon on it too, as well as some cash. She's supposed to earn a necklace, not buy it. Some opponent Mashiro is."
Kurisu Makise ends her ISML run with the Topaz earrings, earning 1883 votes. Victorique de Blois was second with 1732 votes, Mikan Yuuki was third with 1607 votes, Shinobu Oshino was fourth with 1498 votes, Charlotte Dunois was fifth with 1472 votes, Rin Tosaka was sixth with 1307 votes and Rin Natsume was last with 1289 votes.
"I'm happy with how my season ended," Makise said at her press conference in Tokyo. "I may not have finished in the Top 16 of the Nova, but to know that I ended my run on a winning note means that I have some confidence and hope for future seasons, if I survive Preliminaries. I thank Buntarou, Mayuri, Suzuha, Faris, Daru and all who voted for me. This season wasn't the best, but it wasn't the worst, and I can live with that."
Four other exhibitions took place. Rias Gremory won the first of two non-title group exhibitions with 2571 votes. Akiko Himenokouji earned 2226 votes, Shizuku Mizutani was third with 1937 votes, Tsuruya was fourth with 1172 votes, Evangeline A.K. McDowell was fifth with 1074 votes, Eri Sawachika was sixth with 666 votes—a strange occurence at that—and Kiri Komori was last with 504 votes.
Elucia De Lute Ima won the second non-title group exhibition with 2240 votes. Anna Kushina was second with 1872 votes, Sanae Dekomori was third with 1739 votes, Himeko Inaba was fourth with 1381 votes, Ritsu Tainaka and Ryou Fujibayashi were tied for fifth with 1325 votes and Tsukasa Hiiragi held up the rear with 982 votes.
Wrapping up Topaz action...Helmond Totooria prevailed over Milia Maxwell 3747-3614 and Yui Goidou routed Kenjirou Hato 5074-2838.
That takes care of the regular season in the 2013 International Saimoe League. Match Day 1 of the ISML Division Finals is scheduled for September 8, 2013. Vote for your favorite candidates at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate. And keep it right here on the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue for continuing coverage of the world's premier anime character competition, the International Saimoe League!

Oh, go die in a Fire Danny boy. Literally.
I have a confession to make. I’m a new Chicago Fire fan, having been hired to oversee communications for the club just six months ago. But according to some folks, I was also a “shitty hire.” The only professional experience (“zero soccer experience”) I have is “promoting a video game” and I do “not belong leading the Communications department.”
Additionally, I also “need to shave.” To be fair, that one is true, but my wife thinks I look weird totally clean shaven. To be fairer, all of the other statements might also be true, but I would like the opportunity to prove how shitty I am first. To be fairest of all, maybe I already have proven it six months into the job.
But I’m more interested in learning what made me a shitty hire on day one? What brought about the warm reception from a vocal few as I was introduced as a new member of the “Fire family?” My best guess is that because I work for an owner who is supposedly “cheap,” “doesn’t care,” and only sees the team as a “toy.” Or maybe it’s because I’m joining a front office staff that just “doesn’t get it” or only makes “bad decisions.”
Really? Yikes.
Fortunately, those are the only things that I’ve read about online, or have had forwarded my way, or that I have seen on the supporter message boards (I would hate to read the non-supporter boards). That was until the experience at the U.S. Open Cup semifinal when the Fire laid a giant egg against D.C. United. I don’t pretend to know all the history, but from what I’ve heard, the stories told to me, watching the videos, hearing from staff and our owner, I knew how important this game was. I knew why the Club decided to promote the heck out of it (Facebook ads, on broadcast, social media, letter from ownership, ads at the Messi & Friends game, ads at the U.S. Soccer Viewing Party, free parking, make-up games, discounted food, etc.), and while the crowd and atmosphere led by a robust showing of Section 8 were great, unfortunately the result was gut wrenchingly disappointing.
Yes, ownership and family were at the game. And yes, fans have a right to boo and show how disappointed they are, especially when the Club they love doesn’t perform up to expectations. Look, I’m an unabashed Detroit Lions fan, I know the mentality of a fan going an entire season without winning or watching a team go longer than a decade without a playoff appearance. It’s the thrill of victory and agony of defeat that makes sports great. And from what I’ve seen and heard from Fire supporters, I know it runs even deeper in soccer than anywhere else in sports.
But are personal attacks, threats, accusations, etc., that happened at that Open Cup game OK? Are shouting obscenities to staff, our owner and his family, or other supporters attending games with their families the norm? There’s a fine line between love and hate and being critical vs. being destructive. Certain incidents in particular related to that game have given me and others at the Club pause.
It has been shared with me that the Club’s charter (co-written by our owner and Section 8 leadership) makes it clear that all who enter Toyota Park are to be “respectful of all other supporters, participants, match officials, entertainers, athletes, stadium personnel, staff members and stadium property.” Are to “behave in a responsible manner and not interfere in other supporters’ enjoyment of the match.” And are “to refrain from using foul, sexist, racial, or offensive language including any type of obscene gesture.”
In the aftermath of that game, we/I have heard from many longstanding supporters who were afraid, fearful, disgusted with certain attendees behavior. Our role as a club is to draw a line and protect the sanctity and honor of the organization and all its supporters.
While I may be new to the team, I know the Club isn’t delusional. Owner Andrew Hauptman has set high standards that he hasn’t shied away from. And while these standards might not always be met, you can tell that he has instilled into this group a focus on performance, community, collaboration and connectivity. In many ways, the club is more successful than ever by these standards, including the footprint of its foundation, social reach, growth in corporate partnerships, expansion of the season ticket base, deep investments and exponential scale in youth and recreational soccer, broadcasting and so on.
But beyond that, there’s the other side that you don’t always get to see. Chances are that if you’ve met our owner or even just had a conversation with him, you know he tells it like it is, for good or for bad. There’s also a real sense of caring at the Fire, be it regarding the business of the club, or on a more personal level. One “Fire family” isn’t a cliché. The inclusive and authentic nature of our culture starts from the top down. Hopefully you see pieces of it in action by just attending a game and being welcomed at Toyota Park, or from our partnership with the Greater Chicago Food Depository (including upcoming Food Drive at our September 1 game), our annual Practice in the Community event coming up this Saturday, our commitment to inclusiveness by participating at the Pride Parade or the upcoming Pride Initiative on September 28, staff members lobbying City Council on behalf of LGBT athletes, honoring important community leaders on Hispanic Heritage night, partnering with Chicago Public Schools, and so on.
Even going back to the field, earlier in the season, ownership was the first to tell you that the team on the field was frankly just not good enough (even though the jury is out on this year). And in sports, because of that, there will always be those who want ownership to sell. Want to make calls for front office firings? Find me someone who doesn’t think they could be doing their job better. Telling me I suck at my job? That all comes with the territory I guess. But don’t also be surprised that if someone personally goes after anyone in the Club or its supporters in a way that defies the inclusive culture being built at the Fire, that the Club will respond sincerely and want to know why they would still want to be a part of it?
Our integrity within this Club actually matters to us. For me personally and others on the staff, this is our livelihood. Failure isn’t an option. Why would we choose to work together on building this Club with anyone who takes a stand that prevents progress, espouses negativity and is just downright not truthful, inhibiting us from doing our jobs to the best of our ability? Or worse, make attending a game for a supporter a fearful experience?
I don’t pretend to know everything there is to know about soccer, the Fire or MLS. But what attracted me to the job is working in sports, connecting with passionate fans, being part of an organization that stands up for values like integrity, hard work, and humility and a 24/7 desire to bleed for this incredible Club. I heard every one of those elements in my conversations with our owner, AK, and others I met before making the decision to join. I knew that I was becoming part of a bigger movement, tasked with growing the game and the Club, leaving a positive impact on the community and Chicago as a whole. And with all its inherent challenges, that’s what we are going to do. For me personally, I would love your help to get there. In fact, I know how much I need it.
I have another confession – the majority of folks I’ve met since I’ve joined, the staff, supporters, bloggers, media, Club Seat Holders, Section 8 members, etc., have all been more than welcoming. I’ve felt that they want both the Club and me to succeed. While there will always be those who might choose a different route, I’m glad to know that there will be thousands of others that will have my back.
