By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 9, 2011
Mio Akiyama, Shana, Haruhi Suzumiya and Mikoto Misaka are looking like locks to wrap up their respective groups in Phase I of the 2011 International Saimoe League Preliminaries.
Akiyama blasted Itsuwa and Nodoka Haramura with 6,291 votes. Shan torched Shiki Ryogi and Yuno with 6,128 votes. Misaka routed Misaki Ayuzawa and Chrome Dokuro with 5,975 votes.
None of that could match Suzumiya's outing, though. One of the most recognized faces on the Saimoe circuits, Suzumiya destroyed Ai Haibara and Ran Mouri with a whopping 6,960 votes.
In other Group 1 action, Merry Nightmare edged Saeko Busujima 3,661-3,058 while leaving Nanako Yamamoto in the dust. Also in Group 1, Elucia de Lute Irma pulled off her most defining victory thus far, a 3,526-3,514 thriller over Asami Iwasawa. Tsukasa Ayatsuji finished a distant third.
In Group 2, Last Order prevailed over Ikaros 3,733-3,372 whole Isumi Saginomiya finished third. Ritsu Tainaka roughhoused Erika Sendou and Yuuno Arashiko with 4,023 votes.
Group 3 action saw Ruiko Saten triumph over Mizuki Himeji 3,500-3,277 while Erza Scarlet finished dead last. Houki Shinonono took down Ayase Aragaki 3,450-3,346 while Hayate Yagami got the short end of the stick.
Azusa Nakano pulled out a statement win over a formidable opponent from the Infinite Stratos school, Charlotte Dunois, 4,534-3,665, while Izumi Segawa barely got over 800 votes. Nymph cruised past Ami Kawashima and Koromo Amae with 3,878 votes and Nanoha Takamachi busted Suigintou and Shinku in one fell swoop with 3,551 votes.
Down over in Group 5, Kurimi Sakurano was all business against Shiori Shiomiya and Celty Sturluson with 3,695 votes. Hinagiku Katsura pounded Nozomi Kiriya and Touko Amano with 4,924 votes and Ika-Musume grounded Shinobu Oshino and Utau Hoshina with 3,640 votes.
Taiga Aisaka showed why she is a lock to win Group 6. Aisaka flexed her muscles against Konjiki no Yami and Akira Amatsume with 5,046 votes. Also in Group 6, Ui Hirasawa dusted off Tsukasa Hiiragi and Ai Nanasaki with 3,674 votes while Huang Lingyin prevailed over Kuroko Shirai 3,614-3,232 as Kobato Hanato finished third.
Yuki Nagato may be returning for a fourth straight ISML. The right-hand computer girl of Haruhi dismantled Minori Kushieda and Misuzu Kamio with 5,841 votes. Sora Kasugano edged Shouko Kirishima 3,333-3,019 while Fumino Serizawa ended up in third. Illyasviel von Einzbern raised hell on Sawako Kuronuma and Ai Enma with 4,405 votes.
In other Group 8 action, Yuri Nakamura trounced Maria and Mahiru Inami with 5,480 votes and Index Prohibitorum made a statement in her 3,869-3,687 victory over Mato Kuroi. Lucy Heartfilia finished last.
The action rolls on with Match Day 6 of the 2011 International Saimoe League Preliminaries, scheduled for Thursday, March 10, 2011. Vote for your favorite candidates at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.

ISML 2011: Tsumugi upsets Nagi, Eucliwood and Kanade win big
ISML 2011: Tsumugi upsets Nagi, Eucliwood and Kanade win big on Day 4 of Prelims
By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 7, 2011
Tsumugi Kotobuki may pale in comparison to her more established Houkago Tea Time peers in Yui Hirasawa, Azusa Nakano and defending champion Mio Akiyama, but she put Konata Izumi and Astraea on notice on Day 4 of the 2011 International Saimoe League preliminaries.
In Group 10, Kotobuki upset Nagi Sanzen'in 3,159-3,002, putting her as a legit threat to win the group on Match Day 6. Mika Yuuki finished a distant third.
Eucliwood Hellscythe and Kanade Tachibana may as well be on their way to punching their tickets to their first-ever ISML. In Group 11, Hellscythe destroyed Yui Kotegawa and Tsurara Oikawa with 5,108 votes, while Tachibana sliced and diced Cecilia ALcott and Shina Amakusa with 5,997 votes, the largest amount for any one candidate on Day 4.
Group 9 favorite Yui Hirasawa wa all business, trouncing Kotomi Ichinose and Ushio Okazaki with 4,416 votes. Mikuru Asahina edged Laura Bodewig 3,532-3,212 as Kazari Uiharu finished third, and Victorique de Blois took down Lala Satalin Deviluke and Poplar Taneshima with 4,137 votes. Look for a fierce contest between Hirasawa and De Blois for the automatic spot from this group.
In Group 10, Astraea cruised by Rose and Alice with 3,213 votes and Izumi crushed Haruka Morishima and Yin with 4,090 votes. But with Kotobuki's impressive victory, things may not be so certain for these two.
C.C. and Tomoyo Sakagami may need a miracle to stop Hellscythe from raising hell as well as the dead. In the meantime, C.C. was on Easy Street against Sakura Kinomoto and Komoe Tsukuyomi with 4,040 votes and Sakagami pulverized Rika Furude and Ayumu Nishizawa with 4,249 votes in Group 11 action.
Aside from Tachibana, Yui of Angel Beats! is also flying the flag for the crew. In Group 12 play, she took out Saber and Chizuru Akaba with 4,055 votes. Seraphim defeated Homura Akemi and Hanyuu Furude with 3,656 votes and Holo edged by Haruna while annihilating Stocking with 3,634 votes.
In one of the most intriguing matches in Group 13, Mami Tomoe did just enough to beat Anri Sonohara and Madoka Kaname with 2,446 votes. But this group could go down to a Match Day 6 contest between newcomer Kirino Kousaka and veteran Kyou Fujibayashi. Kousaka whipped past Fate Testarossa and Kaori Kanzaki with 4,198 votes, while Fujibayashi laid the book on Hecate and Nessa with 4,316 votes.
Minatsu Shiina, Nagisa Furukawa and Kagami Hiiragi are set to settle it out for the automatic qualifier spot from Group 14. Shiina torched Asuka Langley Soryu with 3,828 votes, Furukawa edged Shiina 3,160-3,060 while pounding Suiseiseki, and Hiiragi rocked Louise Francoise Le Blanc de LA Valliere and Rena Ryuuguu with 3,468 votes.
Another intense Group 15 contest will involve Ruri GOkou, Mafuyu Shiina and Hitagi Senjougahara. Gokou blue past Rei Ayanami and Ryoki Okami with 4,609 votes, Shiina stomped Amu Hinamori and Souseiseki with 4,022 votes and Senjougahara handcuffed Fuuko Ibuki and Yuuki Kataoka with 4,542 votes.
In other Group 16 action, Nadeko Sengoku flattened Mio Isurugi and Manami Tamura with 4,231 votes and Rin Tosaka was all business against Kanon Nakagawa and Nino with 3,840 votes.
The first eight entrants to the 2011 International Saimoe League will be decided on Match Day 5, scheduled for tuesday, March 8. Vote online for your favorite candidates at InternationalSaimoe.com and join the ongoing debate.

ISML 2011: Mio, Mikoto, Azusa, Yuki, Haruhi post huge Prelim victories
ISML 2011: Mio, Mikoto, Azusa, Yuki, Haruhi post huge Prelim victories
By JR Salazar (Bongaboi)
March 4, 2011
The race to garner the first 16 slots in the 2011 International Saimoe League is whittling down, and a few new faces are posting big victories. However, the usual suspects prevailed in the third day of Preliminary action, the most notable being defending champion Mio Akiyama, Mikoto Misaka, Azusa Nakano, Yuki Nagato and Haruhi Suzumiya.
Saeko Busujima and Tsukasa Ayatsuji were left out to dry in their Group 1 contest against the Dangerous Queen, who garnered 5,291 votes. Misaka, known far and wide as the world-famous Railgun, derailed Isumi Saginomiya and Erika Sendou with 5,243 votes in Group 2 play. Nakano, the 2011 Anime Saimoe Tournament champion, clobbered Nanoha Takamachi and Ami Kawashima with 4,910 votes in Group 4. Nagato roasted Shouko Kirishima and Illyasviel von Einzbern with 4,735 votes.
Suzumiya was in the biggest fight of her ISML career against Yuri Nakamura but defied all odds and won, 3863-3641. While the defeat knocks Nakamura out of contention for qualification through Phase I, the close defeat makes her a favorite to qualify via Phase II.
In other Group 1 action, Asami Iwasawa outplayed Merry Nightmare and Nodoka Haramura with 3,632 votes, and Elucia de Lute Irma put herself as a possible Phase II threat, defeating Itsuwa and Nanako Yamamoto with 3,997 votes.
In Group 2, Ikaros, one of the franchise characters from Sora no Otoshimono along with Nymph and Astraea, trounced Yuuno Arashiko and Chrome Dokuro with 3,942 votes. Last Order may be on the outside looking in, but she pulled off an impressive victory over Ritsu Tainaka and MIsaki Ayuzawa with 3,496 votes.
Shana never missed a beat in Group 3 action, torching Ayase Aragaki and Erza Scarlet with 4,520 votes. Houki Shinomono took out Mizuki Himeji and Shiki Ryougi with 3,018 votes, while Ruiko Saten made turkey stuffing out of Hayate Yagami and Yuno with 4,072 votes.
Charlotte Dunois probably won't watch Azusa Nakano for a place in the ISML at this point, but somewhere down the road she might secure a berth. In group 4he defeated Nymph and Shinku with 3,475 votes. In one of the closest matches to ever grace the preliminaries, Suigintou edged Izumi Segawa 2,691-2,607, while Koromo Amae finished a distant third.
Shiori Shiomiya scored an impressive victory over Shinobu Oshino and Touko Amano in Group 5 with 2,991 votes. Ika-Musume edged Nozomi Kiriya 3,108-3,086 while Celty Sturluson finished a distant third. Hinagiku Katsura may be on track to win the Group, winning 4,553 votes en route to a rout of Kurimu Sakurano and Utau Hoshina.

Taiga Aisaka roared her way to a victory over Kuroko Shirai and Tsukasa Hiiragi with 4,363 voted in Group 6. Huang Lingyin powered her way to a win over Ai Nanasaki and Akira Amatsume with 3,529 votes. Ui Hirasawa cruised past Konjiki no Yami and Kobato Hanato with 3,326 votes.
In other Group 7 action, Sora Kasugano steamrolled Minori Kushieda and Ai Enma with 3,502 votes. Fumino Serizawa dusted off Sawako Kuronoma and Misuzu Kamio with 3,010 votes.
Finally, Group 8 action saw Mato Kuroi and Index Prohibitorum tally huge victories. Kuroi rolled past Mari and Ran Mouri with 4,028 votes, while Prohibitorum torched Ai Haibara and Mahiru Inami with 4,796 votes.
