Golden Still: Warriors sweep Cavs for second straight title

CLEVELAND (AP) There were still a few seconds left on the clock when the Golden State Warriors stormed off their bench to begin a celebration that wasn't guaranteed.

They couldn't wait any longer.

They had reached their destination: dynasty.

Stephen Curry scored 37 points, Kevin Durant added a triple-double and another NBA Finals MVP trophy and the Warriors won their second straight title and third in four years Friday night, 108-85 over the Cleveland Cavaliers to complete a sweep and perhaps drive LeBron James from his home again to chase championships.

Love `em or hate `em, there is no denying them.

''That's how you know we're a great team, is when everybody's coming after us,'' Durant said. ''Whether it's opponents, whether it's different coaches panning for us, whether it's the fans, the media that hate us, it feels good when you're the team that everybody's gunning for. It makes us better.''

No team is better.

Golden State. Golden standard.

Overcoming obstacles all season long, the Warriors won their fourth straight finals matchup against James and Cleveland with ease.

''Looking at this playoff journey, we knew it wasn't going to be as easy as last year,'' Curry said. ''Then the challenges that faced us. In October we wanted to be back in this moment, and a lot went into it. It's a great feeling to be back here.''

It was the first sweep in the NBA Finals since 2007, when James was dismissed by a powerful San Antonio team in his first one. His eighth straight appearance didn't go well either, and now there's uncertainty where the superstar will play next.

James, who said he ''pretty much played the last three games with a broken hand'' after injuring himself in frustration following Game 1, finished with 23 points and spent the final minutes on the bench, contemplating what went wrong and maybe his next move.

Following the game, he sat quietly in his corner locker with a towel draped over his head. He arrived at his postgame news conference with a large black brace on his right hand and explained the injury was ''self-inflicted'' following an overtime loss in Game 1, which included a reversed official's call and teammate J.R. Smith dribbling out the clock to end regulation.

''I had emotions of you just don't get an opportunity like this on the road versus Golden State to be able to get a Game 1, and I let the emotions get the best of me,'' James said. ''Pretty much played the last three games with a broken hand, so that's what it is.''

Act IV between the Warriors and Cavs featured a drama-filled Game 1. But from there on, Durant, Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and the rest of this California crew showed why they're the game's gold standard.

And they may stay that way.

Not wanting to give the Cavs or their fans any hope despite the fact that no team has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit in the NBA playoffs, the Warriors built a nine-point halftime lead when Curry ignored a closeout by James and dropped a 3-pointer.

Then the league's best team tightened the screws on Cleveland in the third quarter, outscoring the Cavs 25-13 and prompting Golden State fans to begin those drawn-out ''War-eee-orrss'' chants that provide a perfect musical accompaniment to their 3-point barrages.

By the start of the fourth, the only question was whether Curry would win his first NBA Finals MVP or if it would go to Durant for the second year in a row.

And again, it was Durant, who added 12 rebounds and 10 assists - more satisfaction and validation for a player who couldn't beat the Warriors so he joined them.

After surviving a rougher-than-usual regular season and beating top-seeded Houston in Game 7 on the road in the West finals, the Warriors pushed aside James and joined an elite group of teams to win multiple championships in a four-year span.

Only Bill Russell's Boston Celtics, the ''Showtime'' Lakers and the Los Angeles squad led by Kobe and Shaq, and Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls have been as dominant in such a short period of time.

The Dub Dynasty.

The path to this title was more precarious than the first two for coach Steve Kerr and the Warriors, who overcame injuries, expectations, a built-to-dethrone-them Rockets team and the brilliance of James, who may have played his final game in Cleveland.

The 33-year-old, who came back to the Cavs and ended the city's 52-year championship drought in 2016, is expected to opt out of his $35.6 million contract and become a free agent.

''I have no idea at this point,'' he said when asked if he played his final game for the Cavs. ''The one thing that I've always done is considered, obviously, my family. So sitting down and considering everything, my family is a huge part of whatever I'll decide to do in my career, and it will continue to be that.''

James averaged 34 points, 8.5 rebounds and 10 assists in the series, but as has been the case in the past, he didn't have enough help.

Another Summer of LeBron is officially underway and there are already teams stretching from Philadelphia to Los Angeles hoping to land the three-time champion, who may have to go elsewhere to put together a cast strong enough - and as James made clear this week, smart enough - to bring down the Warriors.

Right now, Golden State is on another tier and with Durant expected to re-sign with them in weeks and Curry, Thompson, Green and the rest still young and hungry, their reign could last much longer.

''We've got a lot of three-time, two-time champs in there, and we'll have plenty of time in our lives to discuss that later,'' Curry said. ''So want to keep this thing going as long as we can.''

Warriors: Curry made a 3-pointer in his record 90th consecutive postseason game and extended his mark for 3s in road playoff games to 44. . Became the ninth team to sweep the finals. ... Won a road game in 19 straight playoff series, tying the Heat's NBA record.

Cavaliers: James scored 748 points in the playoffs, the second most in a postseason behind Jordan, who scored 759 in 1992. Appeared in their 26th NBA Finals game, moving past Atlanta/St. Louis into 10th place all-time. ... James averaged 34 points in his 13th postseason, his second-highest total.

James' future isn't the only one in question. Cavs coach Tyronn Lue, who took a medical leave this season while battling anxiety, said he intends to return.

''I had some tough problems going on throughout the course of the season, and I probably could have folded myself, but I wasn't going to do that,'' he said. ''I knew that even if I wasn't feeling a hundred percent, I had to get back for the playoffs. That's my time. That's my moment. I had to fight through it. That's what champions do. I gave everything I had.''

Washington Capitals: 2017-18 Stanley Cup Champions

LAS VEGAS -- Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals put years of heartbreak behind them by winning the Stanley Cup for the first time, defeating the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.

"It's just like a dream," Ovechkin said.

Lars Eller scored the Cup-winning goal at 12:23 of the third period after Devante Smith-Pelly tied it 3-3 at 9:52.

Ovechkin, who is the first Russia-born captain to win the Stanley Cup, and Jakub Vrana scored, and Braden Holtby made 28 saves for the Capitals, who reached the Cup Final once previously, in 1998, when they were swept by the Detroit Red Wings.

This was their 43rd season. It was Ovechkin's 13th season and Washington's 10th appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2008.

"Years of heartbreak, years of breaking things down and trying again, breaking things down and trying again," Holtby said. "This group never gave up, and we finally did it."

Ovechkin won the Conn Smythe Trophy as MVP of the playoffs. He led the League with 15 goals, setting a Capitals record for a single postseason.

The Capitals tied an NHL record for most road wins in a postseason (10). They ended each series on the road, all on their first try.

Fittingly, they also won in come-from-behind fashion, just as they had to do in all four rounds.

The Capitals lost Game 1 of three of their four series and trailed 3-2 in the Eastern Conference Final against the Tampa Bay Lightning before winning Games 6 and 7 by a combined 7-0.

They rallied from down 2-1 and 3-2 in Game 5 to finish the job.

"We never make it easy, do we?" defenseman Matt Niskanen said. "But, man, what a group of guys and what a performance from a lot of individuals. We played together, showed a lot of character. That's something we got criticized for in the past. Boy, we showed a ton of it this spring."

The Golden Knights' historic inaugural season ended with their first four-game losing streak.

"I think people would have said we would have won 20 games this year, so to find ourselves playing for a Stanley Cup, it's pretty special, but just a little bit short," Vegas forward James Neal said. "But proud of the guys."

Nate Schmidt, David Perron and Reilly Smith scored, and Marc-Andre Fleury made 29 saves for Vegas, which lost three games in the first three rounds.

"We worked hard tonight, we competed hard, just couldn't beat that team," coach Gerard Gallant said. "They deserved the Stanley Cup."

The Smith-Pelly and Eller goals each came off a Golden Knights turnover in their own zone.

"We left our goalie out to dry," Vegas defenseman Deryk Engelland said.

Smith-Pelly scored while falling into the right face-off circle after kicking the puck to his stick.

It was his third goal in as many games and his seventh in 24 NHL playoff games. He scored seven goals in 75 regular-season games.

Eller scored the winner from the slot, shoveling the puck into the net after it got behind Fleury, who made the initial save on Brett Connolly's shot.

"[Fleury] was so far out I couldn't get in front of him, which is usually where the rebound comes," Eller said. "So I got behind him and the puck just squeaks through. Usually, Connolly shoots between the legs, and it was just at the right place at the right moment."

Vegas scored twice in the final 7:04 of the second period to take a 3-2 lead.

Perron tied it 2-2 at 12:56 after he was pushed into the net by Washington defenseman Christian Djoos. The Capitals challenged for goalie interference, but the goal was upheld after video review when it was ruled that Djoos caused Perron to contact Holtby before the puck crossed the goal line.

Smith gave Vegas a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at 19:31.

Washington took a 1-0 lead on Vrana's breakaway goal at 6:24 of the second. The Golden Knights tied it 1-1 at 9:40 when Schmidt's shot deflected in off Niskanen's right skate.

Ovechkin gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 10:14.

John Carlson had an assist on Ovechkin's goal, giving him 55 points (18 goals, 37 assists) in the NHL playoffs, the most by a Capitals defenseman. … Eller is the first Denmark-born player to win the Stanley Cup. … Washington center Evgeny Kuznetsov led the NHL with 32 points (12 goals, 20 assists) in the playoffs. He is the third Russia-born player to do so since 1943-44. (Sergei Fedorov, Red Wings, 1995; Evgeni Malkin, Pittsburgh Penguins, 2009 and 2017). … Ovechkin passed John Druce for most goals for the Capitals in a single postseason. Druce had 14 in 15 games in 1990. Ovechkin's previous high was 11 in 14 games in 2009.

Real Madrid: 2017-18 UEFA Champions League Winners

Gareth Bale scored twice off the bench as Real Madrid beat Liverpool 3-1 in Kyiv to become European champions for the 13th time.


Bale's first was an 'I-was-there' goal, one to rival Zinédine Zidane, Mario Mandžukić and any other you care to name as the best in final history. Marcelo's cross from the left looked harmless enough, but the Welshman, 20 metres out, somehow contorted his body to hook the ball over his head with enough power that it fizzed past Loris Karius.

Quite the contrast to Madrid's opener on 51 minutes, when Karius attempted to roll the ball out to a team-mate only for Benzema to stick out a hopeful leg which turned out to be a goalscoring interception.

Isco had been denied by the crossbar shortly prior to that, but Liverpool – creaking ever since the talismanic Mohamed Salah had been forced off with a shoulder problem in the first half – were quick to dust themselves down after going behind. Indeed they were level just four minutes later, Dejan Lovren's towering header from a corner poked in by Sadio Mané at the back post.

That was as good as it got for the Reds, though, Bale almost single-handedly turning the tide back in Madrid's direction after coming on just past the hour. He struck his second with seven minutes left, a long-range shot that somehow squirted through Karius's palms, and – after Mané had struck a post at the other end – almost added a third when clean through moments later. Madrid and Zidane had already wrapped up their very own hat-tricks by then, though.

What an impact. He only got 13 minutes as a substitute in Cardiff last year, but had a far more telling role to play during his half-hour this time round. That first goal really was one for the ages. Peter Rudbæk, speaking on behalf of the UEFA technical observers, said: "The observers chose Bale due to his game-changing display off the bench and his outstanding acrobatic goal to put his team ahead."

Klopp's troops burst out of the traps and forced Navas into several good saves, but Salah's early departure proved to be the turning point. Liverpool players were inconsolable at full time, needless to say, but once the pain of defeat subsides they can look back with immense pride at their achievements in the competition this term.
