Modern Love

I know when to go out

Know when to stay in

Get things done

I catch a paper boy

But things don't really change

I'm standing in the wind

But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

There's no sign of life

It's just the power to charm

I'm lying in the rain

But I never wave bye-bye

But I try, I try

Never gonna fall for

walks beside me

(Modern love) walks on by

(Modern love) gets me to the church on time

(Church on time) terrifies me

(Church on time) makes me party

(Church on time) puts my trust in God and man

(God and man) no confession

(God and man) no religion

(God and man) don't believe in modern love

ISML 2021: Mashiro Shiina Wins Amethyst Necklace

Dark Horse Riku Dola Takes Amethyst Pendant

By Jo-Ryan Salazar

The Bedlam on Baltic Avenue

12 October 2021

The Re:Zero campaign was absolutely punchless, especially with former Saimoe Prime Minister Rem already taking away much of its thunder, as Match Day 6 of the 2021 International Saimoe League Amethyst Period went to the unlikeliest of winners. A 15-1 dark horse, Mashiro Shiina won the 2021 International Saimoe League Amethyst Necklace, defeatintg Mikoto Misaka 4733-3494. Elaina was third with 2073 votes, Mai Sakurajima was fourth with 1552 votes, Emilia was fifth with 871 votes, Nao Tomori was sixth with 653 votes, Ai Hayasaka was seventh with 574 votes and Yui Yuigahama was last with 467 votes.

Another dark horse took home the Amethyst Pendant. Riku Dola, no stranger to winning big prizes in the International Saimoe League despite being technically deceased in the current irl timeline, got past longshot Levi 3923-2719. Kazuto Kirigaya was third with 2075 votes, Kazuma Satou was fourth with 1609 votes, Taki Tachibana was fifth with 1352 votes, Subaru Natsuki was sixth with 1118 votes, Yuuta Togasjhi was seventh with 896 votes and Kiyotaka Ayanokouji was last with 814 votes.\

The odds of Oregairu having another Saimoe Prime Minister or Deputy Saimoe Prime Minister are drifting, but Iroha Isshiki left a reminder that on its day, it's still relevant. Isshiki won the Amethyst bracelet with a 3585-3218 victory over Nanami Aoyama. Tooru was third with 2220 votes, Utaha Kasumigaoka was fourth with 1837 votes, Aqua was fifth with 1244 votes, Mitsuha Miyamizu was sixth with 1102 votes, Yoshiko was seventh with 931 votes and Shinka Nibutani was last with 523 votes.

A longtime veteran of the ISML circuit, Ryuunosuke Akasaka won the Amethyst Rin with a 3587-2660 victory over Gintoki Sakata. Shidou Itsuka was third with 1933 votes, Kaito Kuroba came in fourth with 1534 votes, Ryuuji Takasu was fifth with 1312 votes, Eugeo was sixth with 845 votes, Shouya Ishida was seventh with 751 votes and Yato was last with 559 votes.

With no Kei Shirogane to deal with, the Spring Seasonal was Miko Iino's to claim, with a score of 41705.7. In a hololive group race, the top three were Amelia Watson (2236), Coco Kiryuu (2099) and Rushia Uruha (2058). In another vtuber group race, Ui Shigure earned a score of 23978.4 to finish first. And in a four-way twintail showdown, Gochiusa's Rize Tedeza finished with a score of 33748.3. Finally, in other exhibition races, Rikka Takarada thumped Yume Minami 3246-2303, Karen Kujou eased past Alice Cartelet 2559-2441, Sharo Kirima rolled past Momiji Mochizuki 3566-1814 and Akame slashed past Yuno Gasai 3113-2968.

France: 2020-21 UEFA Nations League Winners

France produced another stunning turnaround to beat Spain 2-1 and win their first UEFA Nations League title in Milan.

Match in brief

Pogba on 'beautiful' night for France

These sides were both involved in semi-finals that thrilled from the off, but this occasion delivered a more cagey opening 45 minutes. Karim Benzema skipped round Unai Simón but failed to cut the ball back for a team-mate early on while Spain hoarded possession thereafter without threatening. Les Bleus did suffer a setback before the break, though, as Raphaël Varane was forced off injured.

The pattern continued until the game exploded into life in the 64th minute when Benzema's cross was thumped against the underside of the bar by Theo Hernández. Just 40 seconds later, however, France found themselves behind as Sergio Busquets' through ball was driven across Hugo Lloris by Mikel Oyarzabal. The touchpaper had been lit.

Indeed, La Roja's joy proved short-lived, because Benzema curled a sensational effort into the far corner from 25 metres within two minutes. The question now was whether Didier Deschamps' men could repeat the trick they had performed against Belgium in the last four, when they had come from two behind to win.

The answer arrived on 80 minutes as the reigning world champions completed their second successive fightback. Kylian Mbappé timed his run on to Hernández's pass to perfection and swept the winner underneath Unai Simón, though it required two fine late saves from Lloris to seal the silverware.

Player of the Match: Karim Benzema (France)

"An incredible goal at the crucial moment while his work-rate off the ball for the team was brilliant."

Robbie Keane, UEFA Technical Observer

Graham Hunter, Spain reporter

Spain found this a wholly different experience than the win over Italy – from start to finish. Against tonight's opponents they found space closed down, man-to-man marking in key areas and a high press. As super as Luis Enrique's men patently are, they suffer their own versions of kryptonite and that includes rivals with pace, power and pressure. So to take this contest so deep into the 90 minutes, and to be able to burrow their way into asserting their strengths, was highly laudable. But for all the Spaniards' youthful verve, the better side won here.

David Crossan‏, France reporter

France again showed their remarkable powers of recovery to underline that something special happened in northern Italy this week in terms of the squad coming together and developing after the disappointment of UEFA EURO 2020. The new 3-4-1-2 system is bedding in and with Benzema and Mbappé scoring for fun, the present and the future both look very bright for Deschamps' side.

Reaction

Karim Benzema, France forward: "It was a dream night from a personal and a team standpoint. It wasn't easy and we showed the strength of character of this team. We never give up. It's the sign of great teams to never panic and be patient. When you score a goal like that, there's always an element of luck. I knew from the moment it left my boot that it was going in, but not that it would find the top corner."

Didier Deschamps, France coach: "I'm very proud and very happy for the players. We went behind in both our matches. Today we equalised quickly after going behind. Beyond the talent that we have in this team, there's also their character and mentality. In the second half we were more aggressive and forced them into mistakes."

Luis Enrique, Spain coach: "Irrespective of who we play against, or what situation, we always try to play our way – with bravery, attacking with ambition. So tonight it's not so much about the pain of defeat, it's also about a tinge of sadness because we competed very well. The unfairness of football is that we had the chance to put a knockout move on France when we went 1-0 up, but Benzema did something superb."

Mikel Oyarzabal, Spain forward: "I really think that we produced a great performance but they went and produced two really big moments. That's where our win went. We had our chances to score with those saves that Lloris made from me and Yeremi Pino. We worked hard all night and we should be proud of what we did out there."

Key stats

France are unbeaten in their last 25 competitive games (W17 D8), doing better only once in their history: between September 1994 and March 1999 (27 games).

Three of Oyarzabal's six goals for Spain have been scored in the Nations League.

Antoine Griezmann became the ninth player to reach the 100-cap milestone for France.

France have won their last five Nations League matches played outside their own country.

Line-ups

Spain: Unai Simón; Azpilicueta, Laporte, Eric García, Alonso; Gavi (Koke 75), Busquets, Rodri (Fornals 84); Sarabia (Pino 61), Ferran Torres (Merino 84), Oyarzabal

France: Lloris; Koundé, Varane (Upamecano 43), Kimpembe; Pavard (Dubois 79), Tchouaméni, Pogba, T Hernández; Griezmann (Veretout 90); Mbappé, Benzema

More Than 200,000 Minors Abused by Clergy in France Since 1950, Report Estimates

An independent commission set up at the request of the Roman Catholic Church in the country found that the abuse was more pervasive and systematic than previously thought.

PARIS — Clergy members in the Roman Catholic Church in France sexually abused more than 200,000 minors over the past seven decades, according to an estimate published on Tuesday by an independent commission that concluded the problem was far more pervasive and systematic than previously known.

The much-anticipated 2,500-page report by the Independent Commission on Sexual Abuse in the Church laid out in detail how the church hierarchy had repeatedly silenced the victims and failed to report or discipline the clergy members involved.

“The church failed to see or hear, failed to pick up on the weak signals, failed to take the rigorous measures that were necessary,” Jean-Marc Sauvé, the commission president, said at a news conference in Paris on Tuesday. For years, the church showed a “deep, total and even cruel indifference toward victims,” he added.

There has been a growing reckoning with sexual abuse in the church in France after a series of high-profile scandals. The investigative commission was set up in 2018 at the request of the Catholic Church in France in response to growing criticism of its handling of such scandals.

Meticulously compiled over the past three years by independent experts, the findings were the most extensive account to date of the scope of sexual abuse by clergy in the country, especially of children and other vulnerable people.

This followed similar efforts in recent years to disclose or document sexual abuse allegations against Roman Catholic clergy members in Australia, Germany, Ireland, Poland, the United States and other countries as the church continues to grapple with the devastation wrought by decades of sexual abuse scandals.

About 216,000 minors have been abused by clergy members in France since 1950, according to an estimate by the commission — a figure that it said reached 330,000 after including perpetrators who either worked for the church or were affiliated with it as laypersons, such as Boy Scout organizers or Catholic school staff.

The commission also estimated that there had been at least 2,900 perpetrators of sexual abuse among clergy members over the past 70 years.

Mr. Sauvé said that those numbers, while estimates, where “damning” and reflected a “systemic” failing by the church.

Éric de Moulins-Beaufort, the archbishop of Reims and the president of the Bishop’s Conference of France, called the commission’s findings alarming and expressed his shame, adding that he was determined to act.

“Their voice moves us deeply. Their number overwhelms us,” he said of the victims. “It goes beyond what we might have imagined,” he added. “Today, I want to ask for your forgiveness.”

Victims and experts welcomed the report, but noted that it was too early to tell whether the church would act on the commission’s recommendations.

“You are a disgrace to humanity,” François Devaux, co-founder of a victims association, said at the news conference on Tuesday, directly addressing the many Catholic officials in the auditorium.

Mr. Devaux founded La Parole Libérée, an association of victims of Bernard Preynat, a former priest who was accused of sexually assaulting dozens of Boy Scouts from the 1970s to the 1990s and who was convicted in a high-profile case last year.

“You must pay for all of these crimes,” Mr. Devaux said, emphasizing each word.

Mr. Sauvé selected 21 experts, including sociologists, historians, jurists, psychologists and theologians, who dug through church, state and news archives, held more than 250 hearings with witnesses and experts, and worked with demographic, polling and research institutes.

Crucially, they worked in close tandem with victims. Nearly 6,500 people, victims or those close to them, submitted oral or written testimony.

Many victims praised the commission for its thoroughness and hailed the report as a much-needed corrective after years of denial or minimizing from the church.

“Victims were worried that it might tone things down,” Mr. Devaux said of the report. Instead, he said, they did not skip a single question.

“Not only did they give a quantitative and qualitative account of the scope of sexual violence, they tried to understand where it came from — the institutional mechanisms,” he added.

Among the high-profile scandals that drew attention to the problem, the Preynat affair in particular stood out. It embroiled a cardinal in the French city of Lyon who was accused of failing to report the abuse. The case became a symbol of the church’s failings and its secretive approach to dealing with abuse, but it also signaled a shift in the willingness of victims to speak out and challenge church authorities.

“Before that, things were handled with shame,” said Isabelle de Gaulmyn, a top editor at La Croix, France’s leading Catholic newspaper, who wrote a book about the Preynat case. “And they said, ‘No, we were abused, we are going to hold people accountable, and we are going to do so openly,’” she added, referring to Mr. Preynat’s accusers.
