If this were a day of picking the over against the under, the over would be a wise decision.

With the end of the 2010 International Saimoe League looming closer and closer to its conclusion, a record turnout saw nearly 10,000 voters from around the world take part in the festivities of Match Day 8 of the Tiara phase, and the Championship of the Winners' Bracket.

Mio Akiyama is now one victory away from becoming the third International Saimoe League champion after pounding Mikoto Misaka 5318-4626.

"This has to be a wonderful feeling," Akiyama said at the victory rally with Yui Hirasawa at Sakuragaoka Girls High School. "To now be on the doorstep toward ISML glory...it's a dream come true. I hope you cheer me on one more time. I need each and every one of your support to make this possible. I have come to this conclusion: second place is unacceptable. I can win, and I will win this Tiara...for all of you.

"We can do this. Let's make it happen."

Akiyama secured a resounding victory in the Philippines with 75.3% of the vote. She also did reasonably well in Thailand with 64.8% of the vote, Taiwan with 62.7% of the vote and Japan with 60.8% voting for the Dangerous Queen, the bassist of Hokago Tea Time. Akiyama also secured important victories in Oceania, the USA, Korea, West Asia, Hong Kong and Latin America.

"I was facing a very tough buzzsaw in Mio," Misaka admitted at a press conference at Tokiwadai Girls Junior High School. "But I know that I still have a chance to get back in this one. It will mean that I will have to win twice, but it can be done."

Africa was Misaka's strongest region with 81.8% of the vote. She also did well in Canada, Europe, Russia, China and Indonesia in her defeat.

Akiyama will now prepare for the Championship Match, scheduled for September 30, 2010. She will face either Misaka, Shana or Azusa Nakano.

This was another clean sweep for K-ON!, as Yui Hirasawa finished the tournament in 9th place with a resounding 5461-4394 victory over Nagi Sanzen'in.

"I want to take this time and say how much I enjoyed being a part of this International Saimoe League," a tearful Hirasawa said at the victory rally through sobs while surrounded by the entire band, her younger sister Ui Hirasawa, Jun Suzuki, Nodoka Manabe and Sawako Yamanaka. "I'm so happy to finish the season on a winning note and with hope for the future. To me, this is just as good as finishing first. I will never trade this experience for the world. I thank every one of you here for your support, and hope that you will also support Mio-chan and Azunyan, because I know that these two can meet each other in the final, and when that does, there will be no loser, because everyone is a winner! Thank you everybody! I love you all! Love And Peace!"

Flags were waving, showing the initials of the band, as well as their crest. Banners read inside, "Yui and Mio, we are proud of you!", "This Victory's For Gitah!", "HTT Forever!", "They Will All Marry You Now!" and "Don't Slow Down!"

Sanzen'in was unavailable for comment.

Hirasawa's strongest region was South Korea, with 65.1% of the vote. Of all the regions she won, she only failed to win Africa, Eastern Europe and Russia, who voted 58.8% for Sanzen'in.

"I ensured that CLANNAD, for all of the damage it's had this year," said Tomoyo Sakagami at her press conference at Hikarizaka Senior High School, "ended its run victoriously." Sakagami finished 11th in the tournament with a 5171-4611 victory over Saber. Sakagami won every region with the exception of Eastern Europe, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Russia, who voted 54.5% for Saber. Sakagami's strongest region was Korea, with 68.7% of the vote.

As with all the other ISML Tiara Match Days, a series of special exhibitions were on hand in this record turnout.

In a battle of Baka to Test to Shokanju rivals and a possible preview of next year's International Saimoe League, Mizuki Himeji thumped Minami Shimada 5883-3871. Himeji won just about every region with the exception of South Korea, Europe and Russia, who voted 58.9% in favor of Shimada. China was Himeji's strongest region, with 65.9% of the vote.

In a clash of WORKING!! rivals, Poplar Taneshima won a 6522-2825 laugher, winning every region along the way. The Philippines was Taneshima's strongest region, with 78.8% of the vote. Perhaps Poplar is becoming a bit popular these days...

Another one-sided contest saw Saeko Busijima rout Maya Kumashiro 6585-2763. The only region that did not vote for Busijima was Africa, which voted 63.6% in favor of Kumashiro. Taiwan was the strongest region for Busujima, voting 78.2% in favor of the star from High School of the Dead.

Isara Gunther cruised past Skuld 5983-3101, winning every region in the process except for the Philippines, which was 50-50. Canada was Gunther's strongest region, with 82.6% of the vote.

It seems Index Librorum Prohibitorum might be given a second chance to make her case known. A disappointing first effort in 2009 may give way to a more convincing performance in 2011. Prohibitorum made her intentions known by trouncing Kuroko Shirai 5209-4513.

The only regions that did not vote for Index include Hong Kong, Eastern Europe, Russia, China, and South Korea, who voted 56.4% in favor of Shirai. Thailand was Prohibitorum's strongest region, winning 73% of the vote.

Sun Seto got the best of Shuffle!'s Primula, 5203-4418. Seoto's strongest region was Japan, with 65.2% of the vote. Of all the regions up for the taking, Seto failed to garner Canada, Latin America, Western Europe, Russia and Thailand, who voted 56.3% in favor of Primula.

And in the match featuring the old school, Ribbon no Kishi's Princess Sapphire cruised past Sally Yumeno from Sally the Witch 4270-1679. Princess Sapphire took every region, with Africa voting the strongest at 87.5%.

A huge contest awaits the voters with the fifth round/semifinal of the Losers' Bracket. Will Shana continue her chase for the crown? Or will Azusa Nakano quiet the flames once and for all?

Finally, the battle for seventh place awaits between SOS Brigade compatriots? Will favorite Yuki Nagato end her ISML on a winning note? Or will Haruhi Suzumiya put an end to the slump against her?

ISML 2010: Shana stops Hina's defense, Azusa stuns Taiga

There will be a new International Saimoe League champion. The question is: who will it be?

Shana might have a strong case to be the one. The Crimson Flame Haze herself torched defending champion Hinagiku Katsura 3806-3659 to end her title defense.

"It was a good run while it lasted," Katsura said amid the cries of despair and sniffles of sadness at Hakuoh Academy. "But I do have one more battle to fight and I hope to end my year with a victory. Shana proved just too much for me to handle."

"This is a win that will definitely boost my morale," Shana said, eating her 350th melon bread loaf. "I told everyone of my intentions to stop Hinagiku from defending her crown, and I did it. But my job's far from done."

Eastern Europe was divided 50-50 in this battle, but huge victories in China (61%), Latin America (64.3%), Western Europe (52.7%) and Hong Kong (52.7%) proved to be Katsura's undoing. Katsura's strongest region was Africa with 87.5% of the vote, and she also performed well in South Korea, Japan and Thailand, but close victories in North America, Oceania and Taiwan took votes away from her overall margin.

Shana will take on Azusa Nakano, who finally defeated Taiga Aisaka to the tune of 3889-3671.

"I can't believe that I won," a tearfully happy Nakano said after the win when it was announced at Sakuragaoka High School Auditorium. "I'm going to finish no worse than fourth place now. I can't believe it. Oh my god, it's a dream come true."

Aisaka was unavailable for comment.

Nakano carried every region with the exceptions of Eastern Europe (56% in favor of Aisaka), Africa (62.5% in favor of Aisaka), China (53.3% in favor of Aisaka), Thailand (51.1% in favor of Aisaka) and Japan (51.6% in favor of Aisaka). It was a close race, but it will set up another classic showdown between Shana and Azusa Nakano with the loser finishing fourth place in the tournament.

Aisaka and Katsura will battle each other for fifth place on September 26.

As a matter of fact, it was a clean sweep for K-ON!, as Yui Hirasawa defeated Saber 3961-3619. China and Africa were divided 50-50, but victories in the Americas, Western Europe, Japan, Oceania, West Asia, Indonesia, China and Hong Kong and a strong performance in the Philippines (with 68.9% of the vote) saw Hirasawa defeat Saber, also known as Arthuria Pendragon.

Russia was Saber's strongest region, with 62.2% of the vote. She also won in Thailand and Eastern Europe but failed to pick up pretty much everywhere else.

Tiara Match Day 7 was one of those rare instances in which Katsura lost...but Nagi Sanzen'in won. In a literal about-face of predictability regarding the Hayate the Combat Butler characters, Sanzen'in took out Tomoyo Sakagami 3857-3686 on the day Katsura gave up the crown.

"I feel a bit bad for Katsura because she lost to a very good opponent in Shana," Sanzen'in said after her win. "Wait a minute...let me correct myself. I don't because I knew she had to bring out her A-game on Sunday, and she didn't, and look what happened! She gave up the crown to that fire-happy b***h. As for me, I'm gonna get the hell out of this season by shutting that retard up."

Sanzen'in's key to victory was Asia and Africa. Africa voted 75% in favor of Sanzen'in, and the only Asian region to not vote in favor of her was South Korea, who voted 62.1% in favor of Sakagami. Russia was Sakagami's strongest region, with 65.1% of the vote.

Hirasawa and Sanzen'in will take on each other for 9th place, while Saber and Sakagami will clash for 11th place.

As with all ISML Tiara matches, there were special exhibitions galore.

Lala Satalin Deviluke won every region except for 50-50 Africa in her 4828-2238 thumping of Haruna Sairenji. South Korea was Deviluke's strongest region, with 76.5% of the vote. In all the regions that voted for Deviluke, the lowest percentage was 61.4% and that was in Russia.

Another one-side encounter was Keena Soga and Chise Umenomori. The cool cat from Mayoi Neko Overrun ran away with this one, 4617-2647. Umenomori carried every region with the exception of Eastern Europe, which voted 50.7% in favor of Soga. Indonesia was Umenomori's strongest region, with 73.1% of the vote.

Shoko Kirishima of Baka to Test to Shokanju may have cemented her case to be in the International Saimoe League next season with her 6040-1423 thumping of Noel Kannagi. Kirishima took every region in this laugher, with Taiwan leading the charge at 88.2%. The closest Kannagi came to picking up a region was in Russia, who voted 54.1% in favor of Kirishima.

Haruka Nogizaka's hopes of finally qualifying for the ISML got a boost with her 4526-2892 victory over Yakumo Tsukamoto. Nogizaka got massive help from the Americas, Africa, West Asia, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, the latter voting 73.1% in favor of Nogizaka. Russia was Tsukamoto's strongest region, with 60.7% of the vote.

Moka Akashiya trounced Karin Maaka in another laugher, 5288-1594. Akashiya won every region in this one-sided affair. Africa voted 100% in favor of Akashiya, with South Korea trailing behind at 85.4%.

Lum Invader, after all these years, is still a household name, and a memorable personality in her own right. In her match with Lupin III's Clarisse, she proved to be too much, winning 4012-1081. Invader invaded every region successfull, with Eastern Europe leading the charge at a blistering 92%.

Tiara Match Day 8, the Winner's Bracket 3rd Round/Championship of the International Saimoe League Tiara phase, is right around the corner. On Tuesday, September 21, 2010, will Mio Akiyama move one step closer to the crown? Or will the Railgun, Mikoto Misaka, hang the Dangerous Queen out to fry?

BoBA Stew #1 (a.k.a. Chicken Mechado)

This is a recipe from the BoBA House (BoBA stands for "Bedlam on Baltic Avenue", and the BoBA House is my house), handed down from my mom, who got it from my grandparents...and so on.

Ingredients:
1 tablespoon garlic
1 tablespoon canola oil or olive oil
1 teaspoon black pepper
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons oyster sauce
1 teaspoon or 1 cube Knorr Chicken Boullion
2 whole bay leaves
1 can tomato sauce
1 cup water
2 potatoes, each sliced into eighths
1 bell pepper, cut into eights
2 whole carrots
2 whole celery
1/2 of a whole onion, finely chopped
1 pound deboned chicken breast strips
2 chicken thighs
2 chicken wings
2 chicken drumsticks
3 strips maple-smoked bacon
1 whole Aidells's sausage link (preferably Chicken & Apple)
1 cup raisins, for garnish

1. Saute garlic, onions and oil in large pot. Add black pepper and salt. Saute for five minutes.

2. Add chicken and fry until lightly browned.

3. After two minutes, add bouillion, tomato sauce, water, oyster sauce and bay leaves. For best results, use the can as a makeshift cup and place bay leaves across from each other.

4. Let boil for 20 minutes under medium heat.

5. Slice carrots into 1" thick pieces, one bell pepper into eighths and two potatoes into eighths each.

6. Fry bacon strips for five minutes, then cut into 1" x 1" pieces. Set aside.

7. Cook Aidells' sausage for two minutes, then cut into 1"-thin pieces. Set aside.

8. After 20 minutes pass, add bell pepper slices, carrots, potatoes, and sausage. Boil for 15 minutes.

9. Let stand before adding raisins and bacon. This dish is best eaten with brown rice. Serves 4-6.

ALSO...

If you prefer to use beef, tenderize 2 pounds of top round for 1 hour (30 minutes with a pressure cooker), then cut into strips. Keep in mind that this will turn the dish into "caldereta," a steak variant of BoBA Stew #1

If you prefer to use pork, tenderize 2 pounds of loin for 30 minutes, then cut into strips. Make sure to use the leanest portion of loin available from your local butcher.
