BYU: 2025 Pop-Tarts Bowl Champions

BYU has won some pretty big games in its proud football history, because the Cougars have a winning tradition and even boast a national championship back in 1984.

So, is it time to make room on the trophy mantle after Saturday afternoon’s heroic comeback win in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando? That 1984 championship trophy has been pretty lonely for a very long time, and BYU was claiming another national title after it put the finishing touches on a 25-21 comeback win over Georgia Tech.

The Pop-Tarts Bowl means that much to America, and BYU’s players spoke to that mighty meaning on Saturday night as they munched on those Pop-Tarts and appreciated what they had just accomplished. It wasn’t just that 4th-quarter rally to take down the Yellow Jackets and finish 12-2, it was doing it in this backdrop, with all of those Pop-Tart Bowl mascots running around and with all of the fun and games surrounding it.

This wasn’t just a bowl game victory. It was a championship in the eyes of BYU, whose players proclaimed that 2nd national title in program history by donning shirts that read: “The People’s National Champions.”

Now, if anybody wanted to argue this bold claim by BYU’s players on Saturday night, that was their choice. But if they did choose to argue that somehow the Cougars weren’t “The People’s National Champions,” then those party poopers would probably have to go through all of those wild and crazy Pop-Tarts Bowl mascots who were parading around Camping World Stadium all afternoon.

And that would be a bold and brave move, so better to just let BYU have its claim and let everybody enjoy the last few crumbs of a popular bowl event that’s somehow gaining in popularity.
