Atlanta (WACH) — It was a tale of two halves Saturday as South Carolina State beat Prairie View A&M 40-38 in the Celebration Bowl.
Prairie View A&M's offense was hard to stop in the first half. Cameron Peters put the Panthers on the board with a 16-yard touchdown pass to Ethan John.
Peters continued to have a dominant first half with a 27-yard rushing touchdown to extend the lead to 14 points.
Peters finished the half with 295 total yards and three total touchdowns. The Bulldogs recorded 80 yards of offense in the first half, trailing 21-0.
In the second half, the Bulldogs went with Ryan Stubblefield at quarterback.
In the third quarter Prairie View A&M fumbled, SC State's Jordan Dollard recovered the fumble and ran it to the Panthers five-yard line.
Jordan Smith scored a rushing touchdown to cut the deficit to 14.
SC State forced a punt on the next drive and former Ridge View wide receiver Jordan Smith scored on a 10-yard rush.
Smith scored again with 5:05 left in the third quarter on a 19-yard pass from Stubblefield and the Bulldogs tied the game at 21.
The Panthers responded with a 75-yard drive to take a 28-21 lead.
SC State opened the fourth quarter with a 75-yard drive to tie the game.
Less than a minute later, the Panthers scored and Prairie View A&M led 35-28 with 9:53 left in regulation.
Stubblefield connected with Sith with 1:54 left in the 4th quarter to tie it at 35.
Both teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime.
Cornelius Davis intercepted Stubblefield in the second overtime and the Panthers attempted a 38-yard field goal to win the game, but the kick was wide right.
In the 4th overtime Stubblefield connected with Tyler Smith to take a 40-38 lead. Prairie View A&M failed to score after.
