VCU is going back to the NCAA Tournament. The Rams punched their ticket to March Madness by winning the Atlantic 10 Championship on Sunday, knocking off the Dayton Flyers 70-62 in Pittsburgh. Back-to-back A-10 titles. A 27-7 record. And a fan base that is absolutely losing its mind right now, and rightfully so. This wasn’t a fluke. This wasn’t a Cinderella moment handed to them. VCU went out and took it.
How VCU Survived the A-10 Tournament Grind
Winning three games in three days is brutal. Doesn’t matter who you are or how many times you’ve done it. Your legs get heavy, your shot gets flat, and every possession in the third game feels like it costs twice as much.
VCU didn’t care.
On Friday, the Rams opened the tournament against Duquesne and pulled out a gritty 71-66 win. Not pretty, but who needs pretty? On Saturday, they turned around and handled Saint Joseph’s 77-64 in the semifinals — a little more breathing room, a little more confidence.
Then came Sunday. Then came Dayton. Dayton is a program that knows how to play basketball. They’re disciplined, physical, and they never go away quietly. VCU fans who tuned in hoping for a breezy championship game were quickly reminded that nothing in college basketball comes easy.
But the Rams answered every punch. Final score: 70-62. Atlantic 10 Champions. NCAA Tournament bound.
VCU Freshman Nyk Lewis Is the Real Deal
You want a name to know heading into the tournament? Write this one down: Nyk Lewis. The freshman guard was the heartbeat of VCU’s championship run. Against Dayton, Lewis finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds on 5-of-10 shooting.
There’s something genuinely exciting about watching a young player step onto a big stage and look like he belongs there. Lewis had that look all weekend. Coach Phil Martelli Jr. has to be grinning ear to ear.
What This VCU Tournament Run Means For Richmond
Here’s the thing about VCU basketball — it means something to the city of Richmond in a way that goes beyond wins and losses. This is a program that put Richmond on the national map back in 2011 with that unforgettable Final Four run. It gave an entire fan base a reason to believe that a mid-major school from the heart of Virginia could compete with anybody.
Back-to-back A-10 titles? That’s not a coincidence. That’s a program that has built something real. Richmond was already buzzing, waiting to find out VCU’s seed and first-round opponent in the tournament.
VCU’s NCAA Tournament Outlook
With a 27-7 record and two straight conference titles, VCU isn’t sneaking up on anybody this March. Scouts have had all season to study this team. The bracket committee has its full résumé in front of them.
But that’s also what makes it fun. The Rams don’t need to sneak up on you. They’re comfortable being the team you underestimate, and then the team that sends you home.
