Mitchell Pearce leads Sydney Roosters to gritty win From: AAP May 18, 2013 10:29PM
The Sydney Roosters have kept up the pressure on front-runners South Sydney with a tough 12-8 victory over North Queensland in Townsville.
NSW halfback Mitchell Pearce kept the Sydney Roosters in touch with NRL leaders South Sydney, engineering a 12-8 win over North Queensland.
Pearce laid on the final pass for both Roosters tries, moving them within two points of the Rabbitohs and consigning the Cowboys to their second consecutive loss.
Much was made pre-game about the clash being a NSW State of Origin audition for halves combination James Maloney and Pearce and for Cowboys back-rower Tariq Sims.
The Roosters halves, who have helped their team reach second on the ladder, were solid guiding the Sydney side around a wet and slippery 1300Smiles Stadium in Townsville.
While the Cowboys dominated early possession, Pearce laid on the Roosters' opening try for Anthony Minichiello in the 23rd minute, the fullback making an overlap run and taking advantage of a gap created by a Kane Linnett slip.
A first half-try to Robert Lui, on his return from a dislocated knee, put the Cowboys back in touch before halftime and two penalty goals from Johnathan Thurston in the second half gave the home team an 8-6 lead with 20 minutes remaining.
But just as in the first half, Pearce swung the momentum back from the Cowboys with an excellent cut-out pass to Mitch Aubusson who burst through a gap to return the Roosters to the lead.
Sims showed his potential Origin teammates no favours, with consecutive crunching tackles on Pearce and then Maloney in the first half being the highlights in a consistent performance.
The slippery conditions created by the constant drizzle didn't appear to affect either side's ability to keep the ball, with both teams still managing to complete more than 75 per cent of their sets.
Ashley Graham had a chance to send the match into golden point but was unable to ground a Matt Bowen crossfield kick after the final buzzer and had his effort ruled no-try by the video referee.
Roosters coach Trent Robinson said his side's defence on the line again demonstrated how much the players were buying into the system.
He said they had been under more pressure than they would have liked, trailing in the penalty count and facing up to seven consecutive Cowboys' sets, but they again held their nerve.
“I think I've said it a few times, it's easy to talk about the way they keep investing each week in the defence and they keep working hard for each other. Coming up with some really good reads on some world class players out there tonight is a credit to them,” Robinson said.
The Roosters mentor had some glowing praise for Pearce, whose two cut-out passes provided the points.
“Mitch Aubusson runs the right line there to win us the game but it's a really classy cut pass. The way that he (Pearce) plays right in the line, he's one of the best in the game in the line,” he said.
Cowboys coach Neil Henry said while his side's performance had been one of their best of the season, once again errors at key moments had come back to haunt them.
“As a side, we can compete with the big teams in the competition and I think we're still striving for that game where we're controlling all of our possessions,” Henry said.
“We showed glimpses tonight we could do it but they still came through us for a couple of tries.”

Following the second set of semi-finals tonight, Finland’s Eurovision entrant found herself with a place in the final, following her performance of her pro-equal marriage song, which included a lesbian kiss.
Last week, Krista Siegfrids insisted that her song ‘Marry Me’ was not political, but did go on to say that she did want to make a statement about the lack of legal recognition of same-sex marriages in Finland. Organisers forbid “lyrics, speeches, gestures of a political or similar nature”.
Following the performance, in an interview with Danish TV, when asked about the lesbian kiss, Siegfrids said: “It’s just about love – now it’s 2013, and I think I can kiss anyone I want to.
When the interviewer asks how Siegfrids thinks viewers in Belaruse and Azerbaijan might react to her performance she said: ”I think that everybody should have the right to do that. It’s no big deal, it’s not big deal to me. It’s a show, and it’s about love and love is beautiful in any form.”
She goes on to say that she wrote the song for her boyfriend, and that she wants to marry him, and when asked if he minded her kissing a woman on stage, she asserted: “It’s just a show – I have to get married in the show number, and there’s just girls on stage…”
When the interviewer asked her if her boyfriend would propose, she joked: “You’ll have to ask him.”
In the song’s official video, Siegfrids goes in pursuit of the man she wants to marry, with the help of some friends, and eventually, after appearing to kidnap him, he agrees to marry her at the end.
“I don’t think ‘Marry Me’ is political,” said Siegfrids. “It’s about love and tolerance. But gay marriage is not allowed in Finland and that’s wrong. I wanted to make a statement about that.”
Both Norway and Sweden approved gender- neutral marriage in 2009. Iceland followed in 2010, and in 2012, Denmark also joined them in legalising equal marriage.
Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden will all appear in this Saturday’s Eurovision final.
After The Siren Naitanui Goal Lifts West Coast Eagles over North
Nic Naitanui stakes his claim for the AFL’s most exciting player
Robert White
A trademark highflying Nic Naitanui mark in the dying seconds and a goal after the siren lifted the West Coast Eagles over the North Melbourne Kangaroos in a thriller in Perth on Friday night.
Inaccurate kicking plagued the Eagles throughout the night, forcing the team to fight from behind for much of the game before they eventually escaped 12.18.(90)-13.10.(88) winners.
Josh Hill led the Eagles with three goals while Luke Shuey and Josh Kennedy bagged two apiece.
After holding off West Coast for much of the second and third terms, North finally managed to build some momentum by kicking three of the first four goals to begin the fourth quarter. Some run gifted Jack Ziebell and Andrew Swallow goals on the run before Drew Petrie setup Brent Harvey for a short distance set shot.
Down by 15 points with under 10 minutes remaining, West Coast managed to stay alive thanks to some evasive running and a goal from Hill before Shuey was able to shake off what looked to be a badly turned ankle to go back and kick his second with under three minutes remaining.
A well-spotted high tackle on the wing in the final moments rewarded the Eagles with a free kick. A last ditch high ball thumped inside 50 fell into the hands of a soaring Naitanui, who claimed the spectacular mark. He went back after the siren had sounded to seal the two-point victory in front of an ecstatic home crowd.
With some exciting footy being played by both teams early on, West Coast looked the better side for the first part of the opening term as Jack Darling and Kennedy were able to establish themselves as solid forward marking targets. North responded by kicking four straight to finish of the quarter, running out with a 17-point quarter time lead.
West Coast had plenty of opportunities to take the game in the second and third quarter, but 12 combined misses during the stretch meant what should have been a healthy lead was instead a four-point deficit heading into the thrilling final quarter.
Harvey led the Kangaroos with 24 disposals and two goals while Daniel Wells contributed 23. Aaron Black kicked three goals in the losing effort.
David Beckham, who won a league title with Paris Saint-Germain, to retire from soccer at the end of the season
Beckham: 'If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy.'
LONDON - David Beckham is retiring from football, ending a career in which he became a global superstar who transcended the sport.

David Beckham caps international career with a league title with French club Paris Saint-Germain.
The 38-year-old Beckham, who recently won a league title in a fourth country with Paris Saint-Germain, said Thursday he will retire at the end of the season.
“I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level,” the former England captain said in a statement.
Beckham, whose forays into fashion and marriage to a pop star wife have made him a riveting international celebrity, has two more matches left at PSG against Brest on Saturday and at Lorient on May 26. He has been giving his salary to a children’s charity.
Beckham started his career with Manchester United and also played for Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Galaxy, winning titles with all those clubs.
“If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy,” Beckham said. “I’m fortunate to have realized those dreams.”

David Beckham, seen here in China earlier this year, has been a global ambassador for the sport.
On the international stage, Beckham holds the England record for making 115 appearances as an outfield player for the national team.
“To this day, one of my proudest achievements is captaining my country,” Beckham said. “I knew every time I wore the Three Lions shirt, I was not only following in a long line of great players, I was also representing every fan that cared passionately about their country.
“I’m honored to represent England both on and off the pitch.”
Beckham is now living in London with his wife Victoria, a former “Spice Girls” singer, and their four children.
“I wouldn’t have achieved what I have done today without my family. I’m grateful for my parents’ sacrifice, which made me realize my dreams,” he said. “I owe everything to Victoria and the kids, who have given me the inspiration and support to play at the highest level for such a long period.”
With United between 1992 and 2003, Beckham won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups and the Intercontinental Cup.

David Beckham spends time in the U.S. and helps the LA Galaxy to the 2012 MLS Cup.
Beckham left United in 2003 shortly after manager Alex Ferguson accidentally struck Beckham’s eye with a football boot. Ferguson announced his retirement from Manchester United last week.
Beckham spent four years in Madrid — winning the 2007 Spanish title before making the surprise move to Major League Soccer, where he won the title twice.
There were highs and lows in Beckham’s international career. He was blamed for England’s elimination from the 1998 World Cup for his petulant red card against Argentina, but scored the winning goal against the same team at the World Cup four years later.
Beckham responded to jeering at the 2000 European Championship with an obscene hand gesture to England fans, but was lauded by the same supporters little more than a year later when his last-minute free kick against Greece secured a place at the 2002 World Cup.
England dropped Beckham in August 2006 in an effort to renew the team with younger players after a quarterfinal exit at that year’s World Cup. England coach Steve McClaren recalled him the following year after a poor run of form, and he returned for the remainder of England’s unsuccessful attempt to qualify for the 2008 European Championship.
His last England appearance came against Belarus in October 2009, and he missed the 2010 World Cup because of an Achilles injury. He still went to South Africa as part of Fabio Capello’s backroom staff.

David Beckham hits the international scene as a star for famed club Manchester United.
“I want to thank all my teammates, the great managers that I had the pleasure of learning from,” Beckham said. “I also want to thank the fans who have all supported me and given me the strength to succeed.”
Beckham had already started planning for his post-playing career earlier in the season, becoming an ambassador for Chinese football.
“Nothing will ever completely replace playing the game I love, however I feel like I’m starting a new adventure and I’m genuinely excited about what lies ahead,” Beckham said. “I’m fortunate to have been given many opportunities throughout my career and now I feel it’s my time to give back.”
Beckham played a key role in England’s unsuccessful bid to host the 2018 World Cup ahead of the 2010 vote, and the English Football Association wants to utilize his influence and star power in the future.
“He is an iconic figure in the game and produced wonderful performances for his clubs, particularly Manchester United,” FA chairman David Bernstein said. “When you look at his playing and work for England, no one would ever accuse him of being unpatriotic and not giving everything for his country.
“He is a real loss to the game and I am sure the FA will want to embrace him and to get him closely associated with the organization.”
Beckham’s retirement comes a week after the 71-year-old Ferguson ended his managerial career.
“In the week following Sir Alex Ferguson retiring, which came as a bit of a shock, now we have the iconic David Beckham coming out of the game,” Bernstein said. “It’s unexpected even though he is getting to mature years for a footballer.”

Barack Obama today waded into the row over Europe to warn Britain would lose its influence in the world if we quit the EU.
The President used a joint press conference with David Cameron in the White House to send a clear message to the Tory right demanding an UK exit.
“The UK’s participation in the EU is expression of its influence and its role in the world; as well as a very important economic partnership,” Mr Obama said.
And he threw Mr Cameron a lifeline by backing his attempts to get changes from Brussels before putting British membership to a referendum.
“You probably want to see if you can fix what’s broken in a very important relationship before you break it off. That makes sense to me,” the President said.
But he appeared to raise doubts about Mr Cameron’s ability to exact any changes.
He said it would “interesting” to see how successful the negotiations were before delivering a final judgment.
His comments came as a weakened Mr Cameron tried to regain control of his Cabinet as he slapped down senior ministers calling for Britain to leave the EU.
In a rare intervention in another country’s internal politics, Mr Obama suggested the Special Relationship between the US and the UK hinged on our being at the heart of Europe.
“We have a special relationship with the United Kingdom. And we believe that our capacity to partner with a United Kingdom that is active, robust, outward-looking, and engaged with the world is hugely important to our own interests, as well as the world,” he said.
Mr Cameron, buoyed by the President’s comments, said holding a referendum now as Tory MPs are demanding would “not in the national interest”.
“There’s not going to be a referendum tomorrow because it would give the British public an entirely false choice between the status quo and leaving.
“And, I don’t think that is the choice the British public wants or the British public deserve,” he said.
The Prime Minister saw his trip to Washington DC for talks with Mr Obama overshadowed by the increasingly bitter Tory civil war on Europe.
In a rebuke to Michael Gove and Philip Hammond, he said there would be no early poll on British membership and said those calling for withdrawal were “very strange.”
The two ministers deepened the Tory divisions by saying they would vote for Britain to leave the European Union if there were a referendum now.
Their comments piled pressure on Mr Cameron to rush forward the date of the in-out vote before the 2015 general election.
They also spurred on backbench Tory Eurosceptics who vote on Wednesday on an amendment expressing regret there was no legislation in the Queen’s Speech for an early referendum on British membership of the EU.
To head off the rebellion, Mr Cameron has been forced to allow ministers to abstain and will let ministerial aides vote against the Government.
No 10 tried to lean on Tory MP John Baron to withdraw the amendment, which now has the backing of more than 70 MPs but was met with a blunt “no.”
Mr Cameron, who will still be in the US when the vote takes place, is looking increasingly helpless at controlling his party.
Former Foreign Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind said the Tories were starting to look “unfit to govern”
Sir Malcolm said the crunch Commons vote was a personal blow to the PM’s standing.
He said the Tory rebels had “split their own party, cast questions over the Prime Minister’s authority and they will be helping the Labour party’s prospects at the next election.”
He added: “It is quite contrary to all the political instincts of a responsible political party.”
“The Prime Minister cannot encourage his ministers and indeed himself to go through the lobbies supporting an amendment which is criticising the Queen’s Speech.
"That would not only diminish his authority, and also split the Coalition; the public will not be impressed.
"Conservative backbenchers who feel strongly on this issue have to decide who do they want to win the next general election?”
Speaking on the plane to Washington DC, Mr Cameron hit out at those saying they would vote for a British exit if a poll were held now.
“There isn’t going to be a referendum tomorrow, so it’s a hypothetical question,” the PM said.
Mr Cameron made clear he was sticking to his timetable of having the referendum in 2017 if he is re-elected.
All Conservative Cabinet ministers were behind this policy, he claimed.
“When we have the referendum before the end of 2017 we give the British public a real choice, a proper choice. Every Conservative cabinet minister is confident that we will be able to deliver those changes and so that is what we are pushing towards.
“What matters is making sure we do everything we can to reform the European Union,” he said.
He also hit back at his former boss Michael Portillo who claimed Mr Cameron lacked the clout to get the changes he wanted from Europe.
“With great respect for Michael Portillo - I remember working as his special adviser many years ago - but the point I would make to these people is to give up before a negotiation has started seems to me an extraordinary way to go about things.”
He added: “The idea of throwing in the towel before negotiations have started is a very strange opinion.”
Education Secretary Michael Gove sent shock waves through the Tory Party when he became the most senior Cabinet minister to declare he would vote No if a referendum was held immediately.
Defence Secretary Philip Hammond also declared he wanted out of the EU unless there were major reforms.
Former Cabinet minister Lord Forsyth became the latest party grandee to call for the UK to quit.
“I certainly want us out of the EU if there is a referendum, not because we’re leaving the EU but becasue the EU is leaving us,” he said.
He claimed David Cameron’s negotiating position with the EU was fundamentally flawed.
“I think there’s a confusion here. The idea that you could get the whole of the rest of Europe to do a special deal for Britain, many of them would have to have referendums in their own country to achieve it and that they wouldn’t want their own partiuclar changes to the club I think is wrong,” he said.
Labour Europe spokeswoman Emma Reynolds insisted that Labour had not ruled out a referendum for all time.
“We are not in favour of a referendum now and not in favour of a referendum at some arbitrary point in the future,” she said.
She added: “It beggars belief that the Prime Minister, who is leader of the Government, is almost encouraging - or apparently ‘relaxed’ about -
his own MPs voting against his Government’s programme.”
Gordon Brown claimed the Tories were becoming as right wing as Enoch Powell, who infamously said immigration would result in "rivers of blood."
The former Prime Minister said: "A party which was once pro-Europe is now anti-Europe, a party which was once anti-Powellite on immigration is now becoming very close to being Powellite on that issue."
He added: "On almost any issue, you can see the Conservative party doing U-turns. U-turns on alcohol prices, U-turns to legislate on overseas aid, U-turns on gay marriage.
"I suppose the new term isn't U-turn, it's Ukip-turn.
"I say to the Conservatives, Ukip if you want to, we're going to stick to what we believe in."
