Buffalo: 2019 Bahamas Bowl Champions

The Buffalo Bulls picked up their first bowl win in program history Friday with a 31-9 victory over the Charlotte 49ers in the 2019 Bahamas Bowl, the first game of college football's 2019-20 bowl season.

Buffalo fell short in its first three postseason appearances, including a 42-32 loss to the Troy Trojans in last year's Dollar General Bowl. UB bounced back from a 2-4 start this season by winning five of its last six regular-season games, and it capped the turnaround by beating the Niners.

Charlotte was playing in the program's first bowl game. Like the Bulls, the 49ers opened the campaign in lackluster form en route to a 2-5 record, but they stormed back to win five straight games to become bowl eligible. It's the team's first winning season since joining the FBS level in 2015.

Lance Leipold Could Generate Interest From Power 5 Schools

Leipold, who became the Bulls' head coach in 2015, may not be a household name, but those within the college football community are keenly aware of his accomplishments.

ESPN ranked him as the 78th-best coach in the 150-year history of college football last week, in large part because of his success at the Division III level. He led the Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, his alma mater, to a 109-6 record and six national championships in eight years beginning in 2007.

"I'm very humbled and flattered to be mentioned in that company," Leipold said of the ranking. "It is truly the work of the student-athletes, assistant coaches and staff members that I have been blessed to work with that makes something like this occur."

It took the 55-year-old former quarterback a couple of years to right the ship in Buffalo. The Bulls posted a 7-17 record over his first two seasons in charge.

Since then, UB has gone 24-15 with a pair of bowl appearances and now a postseason win. Last year marked the first 10-win season in program history.

The fact Buffalo managed to remain competitive in 2019 despite a long list of departures, led by quarterback Tyree Jackson, wide receiver Anthony Johnson and linebacker Khalil Hodge, is a testament to the foundation Leipold has built in Western New York.

Athletic directors around the country are surely taking notice too. As soon as the coaching carousel starts spinning again following bowl season, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Leipold's name pop up in the rumor mill in connection to some Power 5 jobs.

His championship pedigree from Wisconsin-Whitewater and his recent success at Buffalo suggests he'd be a strong choice to help rebuild a high-profile program.

               

Charlotte Program Moving in Right Direction Despite Loss

Building a football program from scratch is an uphill battle. That's the challenge Charlotte has faced since 2013, when it joined the FCS ranks before getting elevated to FBS two years later as part of Conference USA.

Since the 49ers don't have the history or tradition associated with most teams around the country, they've had to get creative in order to attract recruits and become competitive.

First-year head coach Will Healy and director of football relations Carter Crutchfield worked to create Club Lit—a dance floor inside the locker room to reward wins.

"That was one of the goals when we got here, is it's all about branding," Crutchfield told ESPN's David M. Hale. "People only know what you tell them. You're in the city of Charlotte, we have so much to sell, but we had to find an identity. Club Lit really turned into a viral thing."

It's unique, and it's the type of gimmick that can help swing the decision of an undecided recruit in their favor. That's crucial when you can't point to a truckload of trophies in a case outside the locker room.

The sample size is small, but Healy guided the Niners to a seven-win season after they posted no better than a 5-6 mark over its first six years and they're just two years removed from a 1-11 campaign.

Charlotte will lose a couple of key seniors in LeMay, its leading rusher, and defensive end Alex Highsmith, who entered bowl season tied for second in the country with 14 sacks.

That said, there's a lot of talent set to return for 2020, including quarterback Chris Reynolds, his top two targets in Victor Tucker and Cameron Dollar and linebacker Markees Watts.

It sets the stage for the 49ers to take another step forward next year.

           

What's Next?

Buffalo is set to open the 2020 campaign with a road trip to face the Big 12's Kansas State Wildcats at Bill Snyder Family Stadium on Sept. 5.

Charlotte will also begin next season Sept. 5 by visiting the SEC's Tennessee Volunteers at Neyland Stadium.

Match Day 4 of the 2019 International Saimoe League Eliminations Period has concluded, and the stage has been set for the general election of the 2020 Saimoe Prime Minister (winner of the Heavenly Tiara), 2020 Deputy Saimoe Prime Minister (winner of the Lapis Scepter) and 2020 Speaker of the Saimoe Diet (overall winner of the 2019 International Saimoe League Seasonal Tournaments). And for the first time, a candidate will be standing for election in two races...and going into both of them as an understandable underdog.

That candidate...is Rin Tohsaka. A Saimoe politician and veteran of the Saimoe movement since 2004 with 15 years of proven experience and results, Tohsaka is the voice of reason within the Type-Moon Party alongside Artoria "Saber" Pendragon. She defeated Mashiro Shiina 11753-8756 to qualify for the race for Saimoe Prime Minister and will face the Bedlam's tipped successor to Rem Natsuki, Violet Evergarden, who continued her form against Mai Sakurajima in a 10410-10242 thriller.

Sadly, Archer, who is the older form of Rin's husband Shirou Emiya, will not be there to join her as a possible Deputy Saimoe Prime Minister. Sakuta Azusagawa, Mai's husband, defeated Archer 9214-8671 and faces the Bedlam's choice for the Deputy office, Rimuru Tempest, who eased past Tomoya Okazaki 9429-8902. Rin will also be standing in the Speaker of the Saimoe Diet race against the favored Kaguya Shinomiya as Ishtar. She defeated Enterprise 8904-8667 to claim the Fall Diadem but will face long odds against a bona fide Saimoe contender for next year, one that may be in the running to be a future Saimoe Prime Minister.

Needless to say, while Tohsaka is an underdog, it is but in name only as she has been riding a late wave of confidence from her support and others who believe that a longtime legend of Saimoe politics must dictate the policy of Japan in 2020, deemed an auspicious year by many circles. Rin's name has endured for over a decade as a woman of outstanding personality and character, so much that if she wanted to, she could stand in as a member of the Liberal Democratic Party and contest for a seat in Japan's Diet. A no-nonsense approach to tackling the things that matter to Japan and its advocates around the world shall be the theme of her agenda should she be elected. Doubtless the principles of patience, perseverance and tenacity shall also be emphasized as part of Tohsaka's game plan for 2020.

Hina Amano, as correctly predicted, finished third place in the Fall Seasonal with a 9491-8027 win over Ristarte. In Divine Circlet action, Hibike Euphonium's progressive pair could do no wrong. Kumiko Oumae defeated Nanami Aoyama 9070-8800 and Reina Kousaka edged Sakura Matou, 8979-8768. In Divine Crown action, Mikaela Hyakuya defeated Bell Cranel 8444-7842 and Ryuunosuke Akasaka won a 8226-8193 nailbiter over Izayoi Sakamaki.

In Female Division placement action, Emilia shot down Kurumi Tokisaki 9732-9150, Rikka Takanashi scored the Upset of the Round and won the closest race of the round, a 9647-9623 snoozer over Sagiri Izumi, Chtholly Nota Seniorious defeated Asuna Yuukl 9519-9402, Yukino Yukinoshita bowled past Kurisu Makise 9605-9365, Kamui Kanna thumped Chino Kafuu 9908-9055, Shiro rocked Mio Akiyama 9875-9538 and Shouko Nishimiya defeated Takagi 9615-9063. Joe Burrow: 2019 Heisman Trophy Winner

Joe Burrow of Louisiana State University was selected on Saturday (Dec. 14) as the 85th winner of the Heisman Memorial Trophy, an award presented annually by the Heisman Trophy Trust to the most outstanding player in college football.

The senior quarterback was announced as the 2019 winner of the prestigious honor at the end of ESPN’s live broadcast of the Heisman ceremony from Manhattan’s PlayStation Theater.

Burrow shattered Heisman voting records, notching the highest percentage of first place votes, the highest percentage of possible points and appearing on the most ballots. His margin of victory (1,846 points) bettered the long-standing record set by O.J. Simpson in 1968.

“It’s an honor to stand on the same stage as all of these guys,” said an emotional Burrow after hearing his name called. “I’m so thankful to have played for two of the best programs in the country. I wouldn’t have traded my journey for anything.”

Burrow is the second LSU player to win the trophy and first since the late Billy Cannon did so in 1959. His Heisman triumph makes him the third-consecutive transfer player to win the award (and seventh overall), though he is the first to do so under the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule.

The 6-4, 216-pounder from Athens, Ohio, had an extraordinary season, passing for 4,715 yards and 48 touchdowns (tying a Heisman record), while adding another 289 yard and three scores on the ground. He had a remarkable completion percentage of 77.9 percent, the best in Heisman history. As the field general for the nation’s top offense, he led No. 1 LSU to a 13-0 record, the SEC title (its first since 2011), and its first berth in the College Football Playoff.

Ballots were emailed to 870 media personnel across the nation plus 56 Heisman winners and one fan ballot, for a total of 927 electors. The ballots were received and tabulated by the independent accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP. Burrow polled 2,608 points to capture the award over Jalen Hurts of Oklahoma (762 points), Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields (747 points) and Ohio State defensive end Chase Young (643 points). The point total is reached by a system of three points for a first place vote, two for a second and one for a third.

Burrow will be officially inducted into the Heisman family at the 85th annual Heisman Memorial Trophy Dinner Gala on Sunday evening, December 15, 2017, at the Marriott Marquis in New York.

HONOLULU (AP) — The State of Hawaii has virtually claimed responsibility for being rendered the bane of the now-disgraced United States Military Academy football team of West Point, N.Y.

Hawaii—established as the 50th state in the union, an influential province in the Pacific Rim, known for being the formative home of many successful American football players—through the Governor's Office, claimed responsibility for putting the "Black Knights" in "a hole they could never get out of," per a spokesman at an impromptu press conference outside Iolani Palace.

The University of Hawaii Rainbow Warrior football team of Mano'a initiated the two-step operation of drawing the highest of enmity from the Long Grey Line in a complete offensive showcase at the Aloha Stadium proving grounds on 30 November 2019. The Warriors routed Army to a man 52-31, effectively ending Army's fleeting attempt in vain to qualify for a Football Bowl Alliance-sanctioned college bowl game at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), the highest level of collegiate American football in the country.

As for the Midshipmen, their final opponent to close out their productive 2019 campaign are the Wildcat football team of Kansas State University of Manhattan, Kan., in the 2019 AutoZone Liberty Bowl at the game's namesake stadium in Memphis, Tenn. The Wildcats team manager, Christopher Paul Klieman, was formerly the manager of the Bison football team of North Dakota State University in Fargo, N.D., an established multiple champion at the second-tier NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS).

Ishtar delivered one of the biggest upsets as called by the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue on match day 3 of the 2019 International Saimoe League Eliminations Period and the 2019 ISML Fall Seasonal Semifinals. Ishtar defeated Hina Amano 10646-10100 to now become an odds-on favorite to win the diadem. She is prediection to win by at least 500 votes over Enterprise, who eased past Ristarte 10666-9264. In the Female Division, Rikka Takanashi rolled past Yukino Yukinoshita 11565-9485, Mashiro Shiina prevaiuled over Chtholly Nota Seniorious 11091-10991, Violet Evergarden slammed Shouko Nishimiya 11748-10052 and Kurumi Tokisaki shot down Iroha Isshiki 11388-10540. In the Male Division, Sakuta Azusagawa defeated Willem Kmetsch 10876-8775, Riku Dola rocked Taki Tachibana 10439-8963, Touma Kamujou broke Saitama 10203-9574 and Tomoya Okazaki defeated Kazuma Satou 10590-9072.

Qualifying for the Fall Seasonal Tournament are Ishtar (8125), Adele von Ascham (7830), Megumi Tadokoro (7990), Hina Amano (9021), Ristarte (8500), Sumireko Sanshokuin (7519), Enterprise (8144) and Laffey (7972). Finally, in a special match, Emilia won the closest race of the round, a 10487-10448 classic over Asuna Yuuki.
