More Olympic quick hits: Day 4

Well, a bronze is better than finishing fourth. See, I believe that finishing fourth in the Olympics is just as good as finishing last. But there have been some unfortunate luck for our guys. The Hamm Brothers got injured. And we flat-out stunk it up in the floor and pommel.

Thank God for Sasha Artemev. He bailed the boys out. The USA would end up with a 275.850, good enough for the bronze. Japan got the silver with a 278.875 thanks to some acrobatics on the high bar (honto ni doitashimashite, Nihon no otoko-jin), and the home fans got to see China get their well-deserved gold medal, with 286.125 points.

Inside the Water Cube, Michael Phelps does his record-smashing business in the 200-meter freestyle (Peter Vanderkaay got bronze, behind South Korea's Park Tae-Hwan), Natalie Coughlin rolls on in the 100-meter backstroke, and the duo of Aaron Peirsol and Matt Grevers make it a 1-2 deal at the 100-meter backstroke. Leisel Jones played spoiler, though, with her win in the 100-meter breastroke. Rebecca Soni got the silver for the USA.

Regardless of what happens at these games, I have nothing but scathing remarks for the IOC's decision to drop baseball and softball after these Games. As well as the decision not to add any other sports.

They got a ways to go before they can be compared with Hu Jintao's minions in terms of totalitarianism, and miles to go before they are in Kim JOng-Il's league. But they are getting there, if at a snail's pace. They ARE getting there.

Meanwhile, Venezuela is getting hung out to dry by this USA side.
