ISML 2009: Holy smokes, it's a Taiga of an Upset!

ISML 2009: Holy smokes, it's a Taiga of an Upset!

August 7, 2009

There will be a new Ruby necklace holder.

It sent shock waves throughout the International Saimoe League today. In match day 8 of the 2009 Ruby necklace phase, Haruhi Suzumiya's defense of her necklace ended at the hands of Taiga Aisaka.

The upstart from Toradora! scored the biggest victory of her ISML career, a 1558-1533 upset over the leader of the SOS Brigade in the Chilean capital of Santiago.

"Give credit to Taiga, she is as good an opponent as you will see," said Suzumiya after the match. "You can never underestimate a number of these new faces to the ISML. The rest of the opponents she will face will be on their heels."

"My goal here was to make a point that in a competition as intense as this, anyone can beat anyone," a smug Aisaka said at the post-match conference. "We are ready to finish this regular season on the right note."

Hinagiku Katsura rode on the wings of a Hayate the Combat Butler sweep to arrive on the doorstep of her first ISML necklace.

Katsura defeated Shiori Misaka 1890-832 in Seoul, while Maria disposed of Akari Mizunashi 2083-759 in Buenos Aires and Nagi Sanzen'in easily defeated Kallen Kozuki (Stadtfeld) 1891-807 in Tehran.

A victory over also-unbeated Tomoyo Sakagami will all but end the math. Sakagami had little difficulty in pummeling Index L. Prohibitorum 2056-825 in Tokyo. However, a victory by Tomoyo does not guarantee that she will finish first. She is currently seventh in the overall standings.

Kotomi Ichinose has an easier chance of finishing unbeaten, but she will need to thoroughly overcome Rika Furude.

The baby-faced violin assassin sent Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga flying in a 2000-618 rout in Bangkok. Furude herself defeated Chii 1707-992 in Lagos.

Shana, who consolidates her overall standing as the league leader, torched Ami Kawashima 1954-1175 in London.

While the match between Shana and Haruhi has now become anticlimactic, Haruhi will have an excellent opportunity to knock the fiery-eyed tsuderekko out of contention. At the same time, a victory by Shana could put her in contention to steal the Ruby from Kotomi and Hinagiku.

Yuki Nagato and Suigintou each face long odds at winning the Ruby, but have an excellent shot at going through the phase unbeaten.

Nagato cuised to a 1767-792 victory over Shiki Ryogi in Bogota. The winner of this year's Topaz necklace will look to add to her impressive slate of results when she faces Kagami Hiiragi, who lost to Shinku 1769-1335 in Toronto.

Suigintou herself was too powerful for already-eliminated Anya Earlstreim 1901-960 in Sydney. Her win added to what was an easy Rozen Maiden sweep, as Suiseiseki performed garbage duty against Vita, 1911-838 in New York City.

Furude's victory was part of another sweep: that of the Higurashi girls. Rena Ryuuguu tossed aside Tamaki Kawazoe 1617-813 in Moscow and Hanyuu Furude was rarely troubled by Evangeline A.K. McDowell, prevailing 1623-966 in Karachi.

In a battle of fellow Time Space Administration Bureau members, defending champion Fate Testarossa Harlaown and Bardiche Assault overpowered Hayate Yagami and Reinforce Zwei, blowing them out 1917-623 in Los Angeles.

In other action...C.C. was all business in a 1716-1311 rout of Mei Sunohara, Mikuru Asahina and her beam overpowered Mai Kawasumi's swordsmanship 1962-1102 Rin Tosaka knocked Yuuhi Katagiri's lights out 1877-999 in Sao Paolo, Nagisa Furukawa made her intentions for a late-season push clear with a 1882-796 drubbing of Alice Carroll in Shanghai and Louise Francoise Le Blanc De La Valliere got past Ayu Tsukimiya 1539-1367 in Dhaka.

A genuine Thrilla in Manila saw Amu Hinamori claim victory over Makoto Sawatari 1111-1078, Kyou Fujibayashi prevailed over Illyasviel von Einzbern 1483-1313 in Cairo, Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness) crushed Sayuri Kurata 1824-1016 in Jakarta, Paris witnessed a Patchouli Knowledge win a rare battle-a 1206-764 thumping of Aya Shameimaru, Nayuki Minase cruised past Kirino Chiba 1514-825 in Istanbul and Fuuko Ibuko left Saber seeing stars in a 1705-1345 beatdown in Lima.

Wrapping up action...Konata Izumi lynched Marisa Kirisame 1554-1160 in Kinshasa, Nanoha Takamachi busted Nagi 1779-835 in Algiers, Horo chomped up Misuzu Kamio 1828-1076 in Milan, Minori Kushieda tore down Remilia Scarlet 1593-892, Tsukasa Hiiragi shredded Mikoto Misaka 1762-1004 in Santo Domingo, and Katowice saw Sakura Kinomoto outwit Reimu Hakurei in a battle of clow cards and ofuda 1475-1280.

The Aquino Legacy Is Peaceful Regime Change

By PAUL WOLFOWITZ

Corazon Aquino, who died of cancer Saturday at the age of 76, will be remembered as the surprisingly tough “housewife” who forced a dictator, Ferdinand Marcos, to leave office after his attempt to steal an election. But she also deserves to be remembered as the leader of the first “People Power” revolution. Her success strengthened U.S. confidence in what was then a new policy of promoting peaceful democratic change, a policy that remains relevant today.

Marcos ruled the Philippines for 21 years, nine of them under martial law. Initially hailed as a reformer, his regime became progressively more tyrannical, corrupt and incompetent, particularly as his health deteriorated and he became dependent on his wife and on the cronies he promoted solely based on loyalty.

Some U.S. officials in the mid-1980s defended Marcos on the grounds that “there’s no real alternative” (though not, as often claimed, because “at least he’s our son of a bitch”). Embassy officials said that the Philippine opposition was weak and expected the U.S. government to do their work for them. But that ignored the fact that continued U.S. support for Marcos was itself discouraging opposition.

Marcos himself was happy to encourage the belief that U.S. support made opposition to him futile. At the same time, he actively eliminated viable alternatives, refusing to name a vice president and jailing or exiling his democratic opponents—most prominently Mrs. Aquino’s husband, Benigno.

Everything changed on Aug. 21, 1983, with the murder in broad daylight of Benigno Aquino as he emerged from the aircraft that had returned him from exile in the U.S. That event transformed Corazon Aquino into the leader of an opposition movement that eventually forced Marcos from power. And it reinforced a change in U.S. policy that would have far-reaching consequences in places as far removed as Chile and South Korea.

The U.S. began to press Marcos for political, economic and military reform. The Reagan administration debated whether this pressure might lead to something worse, as in Iran and Nicaragua during the previous administration. But in the end, the conclusion was that it would be more dangerous if Marcos continued on his current course, which was playing into the hands of a brutal insurgency. As a result, U.S. pressure for reform became stronger and increasingly public over the course of the next two years. Finally, in November 1985, Marcos announced on American television that he was calling a snap election for the following February, hoping to gain a popular mandate that would enable him to deflect U.S. pressure.

Marcos calculated that the deeply divided opposition would split its vote among two or more candidates, permitting him to claim a relatively clean victory. He could not foresee that Mrs. Aquino, dismissed by critics as “just a plain housewife,” would manage to unite the opposition around a single ticket, forcing her main opponent to sign on as her running mate. As a consequence, Marcos had to resort to massive fraud to steal the election. When he moved to arrest some of his own associates on suspicion of disloyalty, more than a million people gathered to block the arrests, displaying the yellow ribbons that had come to symbolize Benigno Aquino and his widow.

The White House warned Marcos against “attempts to prolong the life of the present regime by violence.” Meanwhile, President Reagan’s friend and personal envoy, Sen. Paul Laxalt, reinforced the message in a direct phone call, telling Marcos that it was “time to cut, and cut cleanly.” In the end, Marcos refrained from using violence to break up the demonstrations and instead boarded a U.S. Air Force plane on Feb. 25, 1986, and headed to exile in Hawaii.

While U.S. influence was significant in bringing about this remarkable peaceful transition, the courage of the Philippine people and Corazon Aquino’s leadership were the real impetus. The U.S. helped, not by forcing or imposing an outcome, but by withholding support for Marcos, thus empowering Philippine democrats.

Success in the Philippines encouraged the Reagan administration to continue pressing for democratic reform elsewhere, not only with hostile regimes like the Soviet Union but with “friendly” authoritarians as well. The experience gave the administration confidence that political change did not have to end in violence and disaster. The peaceful democratic transition in the Philippines in 1986 was soon followed by the administration’s decision the following year to persuade President Chun Du-hwan of South Korea to step down and allow direct elections. And it affected U.S. policy in places far beyond East Asia.

The years following the triumph of People Power witnessed a series of remarkable peaceful transitions, in places as diverse as the Soviet Union and Chile, Romania and South Korea, Taiwan and South Africa. The trend continues today despite the resistance of authoritarian rulers (witness Iran’s “Green Revolution”) and some regression on the part of democracies. While these results always depend principally on the people of the individual countries, some credit goes to Corazon Aquino for showing the way and for encouraging a U.S. policy of support for democratic reform. One hopes that U.S. policy continues in this vein and has not returned to a “realist” approach that minimizes the importance of peaceful democratic reform.

President Aquino’s record in office was less distinguished than her record as leader of the opposition. The country today is still a long way from the success that could be expected of a population that is so energetic, hard working and generally well educated. Some people have even become nostalgic for what they now remember as the strong leadership of Ferdinand Marcos.

What they forget is how far Marcos had departed from the promise of his early years in office, and how rapidly he was taking the Philippines down a dangerous path. One of the most notable aspects of the Aquino transition was the spirit of reconciliation that she brought to her office. Despite her personal suffering and mistreatment at the hands of the Marcos regime, she was not vengeful. Nor did she dwell on resentment of past U.S. support for her antagonist. As one of the first senior U.S. officials to meet with Mrs. Aquino, during a visit to Manila in January 1985, I was surprised to encounter no recriminations, only a warm welcome for the new U.S. policy. It was left to Marcos’s spokesman to criticize this meeting with an opposition leader as “interfering in Philippine internal affairs.” That’s what tyrants will always say.

ISML 2009: Kotomi Ichinose...the next Lady in Red?

ISML 2009: Kotomi Ichinose...the next Lady in Red?

August 5, 2009

Her hair may be a deep, rich indigo, but Kotomi Ichinose is two big victories away from taking on a new nickname: "The Lady in Red."

As in Ruby Red.

In Match Day 7 of the 2009 International Saimoe League Ruby necklace phase, she was all business against Louise Francoise Le Blanc De La Valliere in Tehran, winning 1645-1271 to stay atop the standings.

Hinagiku Katsura, Yuki Nagato and Shana also scored big victories to keep the pressure on the bookworm known for using a violin as a weapon of aural destruction.

Katsura had no problems defeating Evangeline A.K. McDowell, winning 1848-750 in Dhaka, Nagato scored a critical 1512-1407 decision over fellow SOS Brigade member Mikuru Asahina in Milan and Shana got the job done in a 1863-1200 torching of Konjiki no Yami in Moscow.

Others in the chase kept their clean sheets this phase. Haruhi Suzumiya rolled past Ami Kawashima 1834-1213 in Lagos, Horo chomped up Remilia Scarlet 1882-837, Suigintou pasted Aya Shameimaru asunder 2027-587 in Cairo and Tomoyo Sakagami ripped apart Saber 1843-1160 in Algiers.

Defending champion Fate Testarossa Harlaown bounced back with a 1705-1096 victory over Ayu Tsukimiya in Madrid.

The Hayate the Combat Butler girls were big winners today, earning the only series sweep. Maria prevailed over Tsukasa Hiiragi 1628-1324 in Lima and Nagi Sanzen'in scored a businesslike 1931-631 victory over Kirino Chiba in Los Angeles.

Prohibitorum, Misuzu Kamio defeated Yuuhi Katagiri 1327-1073 in Paris, Mikoto Misaka scored a 1198-881 victory over Tamaki Kawazoe in Istanbul and Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga winless streak continued with a 1704-632 whipping by Chii in Bangkok.

In spite of his efforts against AC Milan and F.C, Barcelona, I would love to see David Beckham leave the Galaxy. He chose not to start for the first part of the season, and while I frown on the actions the bloke of my friends from the Los Angeles Riot Squad, Beckham's infidelity to his club has elicited my vote of no confidence.

Landon Donovan is still one of my favorite footballers. He will always be. He would do what Beckham is doing. I don't think it would even register.

Rest in peace, Cory Aquino. What you did-no, what everyone in the People Power movement did-will go down as the most important event in the history of this country. I was only two years old when this happened, and I remember this well.

And so I will salute you by wearing yellow tomorrow at church. Rest in peace. When I return to the Philippines, I plan to pay a visit at Heritage Park. You will go down as the Greatest Filipina That Ever Lived.

ISML 2009: Kotomi, the unlikeliest of good girls, tops Ruby standings

August 2, 2009

On a day in which a Filipina heroine was given a salute, a day in which unfinished business was attained in Rome and the Los Angeles Galaxy earned F.C. Barcelona's respect at the Coliseum, Kotomi Ichinose topped the 2009 International Saimoe League Ruby Necklace Standings through six match days.

Wait, who?

Yes, you are not seeing things or reading hearsay. Ichinose and her mad violin blew everyone away, and she walked to the top of the leaderboard with an impressive 1376-1337 victory over defending champion Fate Testarossa Harlaown in Tehran.

It was the first in a series of critical results that whittled the field for the necklace to eight. And two of the Rozen Maiden Alice Dolls have seen their campaign end.

Mikuru Asahina defeated Shinku 1388-1295 in Lagos and Suiseiseki faced a stiff roadblock in Tomoyo Sakagami, submitting to a 1550-1200 rout in Moscow. Suigintou salvaged victory, defeating Sakura Kinomoto 1580-1049 in Dhaka.

The SOS Brigade claimed a sweep, while Shana kept her lead at the top of the overall standings.

Haruhi Suzumiya got some hard-earned payback against her protege Konata Izumi, winning 1492-1115 in Mexico City and Yuki Nagato prevented a would-be sweep for CLANNAD, prevailing 1362-1277 in Buenos Aires.

Shana herself had a tough nut to crack in Rin Tosaka, but got the job done with a 1550-1272 win in Algiers.

In other action...Maria dusted off Tamaki Kawazoe 1835-711 in Tokyo, Reimu Hakurei scored a 1300-789 win over Kirino Chiba in Mumbai, Vita defeated Aya Shameimaru 1190-803 in Sao Paulo, Kyou Fujibayashi routed Tsukasa Hiiragi 1491-1140 in New York City, Minori Kushieda crushed Mikoto Misaka 1311-956 in Shanghai and Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness) cruised to a 1489-1091 win in Los Angeles.

Illyasviel von Einzbern took out Ayu Tsukimiya 1499-1055 in Seoul, Karachi witnessed Yuuhi Katagiri score a 1127-788 decision over Remilia Scarlet 1127-788, Louise Francoise Le Blanc De La Valliere rolled past Chii 1393-960 in Manila, Sayuri Kurata took down Misuzu Kamio 1256-977 in Cairo and Evangeline A.K. McDowell wass all business with a 1191-977 victory over Index L. Prohibitorum in Jakarta.

Hayate Yagami was too good for Akari Mizunashi 1405-713 in Paris, Istanbul witnessed Hanyuu Furude pulverize Marisa Kirisame 1500-731, Horo chomped up Rena Ryuuguu 1428-1104 in London (though Craft Lawrence sold the billhooks at some market unknown to Bongaboi or the Bedlam on Baltic Avenue as of this article date), Saber slashed the living daylights out of Shiori Misaka 1497-776 in Lima and Patchouli Knowledge scored a rare victory with a 1071-1012 thriller over Kallen Kozuki (Stadtfeld) in Bangkok.

ISML 2009: Suiseiseki still on pace after Ruby 5

ISML 2009: Suiseiseki still on pace after Ruby 5

July 30, 2009

As the month of August beckons and the field for this year's 2chan and Anizone Saimoe tournaments are being determined, Suiseiseki remains first after five match days in the 2009 International Saimoe League Ruby necklace phase.

She had no issues in brushing aside Shiori Misaka 1867-765 in Lagos. The Rozen Maiden Alice Dolls claimed another sweep. Suigintou demolished Kallen Kozuki (Stadtfeld) 2074-693 in Los Angeles and Shinku prevailed over Nagisa Furukawa 1619-1134 in New York City.

The Hayate, Lucky Star and SOS Brigade representatives also claimed sweeps.

On the Hayate side, Nagi Sanzen'in trounced Shiki Ryogi 1964-789 in Katowice, Maria rolled pase Minori Kushieda 1767-996 in Istanbul and Hinagiku Katsura pulverized Marisa Kirisame 1840-647 in Buenos Aires.

Konata Izumi prevailed over Nagi 1466-1074 in Santo Domingo, Tsukasa Hiiragi laid the bombs on Hayate Yagami 1736-1083 in Seoul and Kagami Hiiragi secured the sweep with a 1419-1166 victory over Reimu Hakurei in Mumbai. The defeat also confirmed that Touhou's campaign to at least remain in the ISML automatically is essentially over.

On the SOS Brigade side, Mikuru Asahina tore down Nayuki Minase 1705-1160 in Tokyo, Yuki Nagato prevailed over Mei Sunohara 1395-1258 in Lima and the franchise, Haruhi Suzumiya, won a 1476-1463 thriller over Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness) in Madrid.

ISML 2009: Can anyone stop the Dolls from running away with this one?

ISML 2009: Can anyone stop the Dolls from running away with this one?

July 29, 2009

As match day 4 in the 2009 International Saimoe League Ruby necklace phase concluded, the question brought up was: can anyone stop the Rozen Maiden Alice Dolls from hogging the spotlight?

Another sweep meant that Suiseiseki landed at the top of the rankings, with Spice and Wolf's Horo hungry for her first necklace of her career trailing behind.

The wolf goddess of legend and the defending Korean champion chomped up Maria 1596-1283 in Santiago.

Suiseiseki had no problems defeating Evangeline A.K. McDowell 1835-833 in Seoul. Suigintou crushed Kirino Chiba 2111-786 in Mexico City. Shinku faced the toughest test of the three in Mei Sunohara, and even she prevailed, with a 1689-1126 win in New York.

Fate Testarossa Harlaown also had an easy outing. The defending champion trounced cupcake Amu Hinamori 1766-878 in Lagos.

This was a day in which the TSAB scored another rare sweep. Vita prevailed over Kallen Kozuki (Stadtfeld) 1133-1009 in Bogota. Hayate Yagami was all business against hapless Tamaki Kawazoe, winning 1198-885 in Sydney and Nanoha Takamachi made a statement with a 1675-1271 victory over Saber.

The Bedlam on Baltic Avenue and Bongaboi previously reported that Touhou is officially down for the count. Apparently, Reimu Hakurei is not out of it yet. Shiki Ryogi confirmed it, losing 1381-1148 in Moscow.

Also confirming a sweep were the girls of Higurashi. Konata Izumi's relevance seems to be questioned with her 1425-1200 defeat to Hanyuu Furude in Shanghai. Rena Ryuuguu took care of business with a 1492-1303 win over Sayuri Kurata in London, and Rika Furude prevailed over Mai Kawasumi 1519-1342 in Los Angeles.

Shana remained in the top spot with her 2157-666 blowout of Remilia Scarlet in Buenos Aires. Taking this biggest drop in the overall rankings was Mikuru Asahina, who lost a 1793-1267 howler to Nagi Sanzen'in in Dhaka.

In other action...Alice Carroll ran it up on Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga 1615-636 in Mumbai, Haruhi Suzumiya kept pace over Shana with a 2062-762 blowout of Nagi in Sao Paulo, Rin Tosaka defeated Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness) 1671-1247 in Karachi, Kotomi Ichinose sounded off Akari Mizunashi 1896-698 in Manila, Fuuko Ibuki routed Sakura Kinomoto 1804-1159 in Cairo and Ami Kawashima won a 1437-1395 thriller over Misuzu Kamio in Jakarta.

In Paris, Yuuhi Katagiri chalked up a 1443-949 win over Mikoto Misaka, C.C. was too good for Louise Francoise Le Blance De La Valliere in a 1654-1252 victory in Istanbul, Hinagiku Katsura scored an impressive 1752-1233 slashing of Taiga Aisaka in Tehran and Illyasviel von Einzbern stomped Chii 1616-992 in Bangkok.

A familiar face to Gundam fans, Lacus Clyne of SEED fame defeated Yakumo Tsukamoto of School Rumble 1493-1285 in Buenos Aires. And can we be seeing Asuka Langley Soryu playing her trade next season? Now known as Asuka Langley Shikinami, the free-spirited, competitive personality of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise crushed Sailor Moon's Rei Hino (also known as Sailor Mars) 2088-619 in Seoul.

In a battle of endowed demons, Lala Satalin Deviluke boosted her chances with a 1592-1052 victory over Rosario+Vampire's Moka Akashiya in Karachi. In a match harkening to the first season of the ISML, Tsuruya earned a thrilling 1541-1524 victory over CLANNAD's Ryou Fujibayashi in Dhaka.

One thing should be for certain: there will be someone from K-ON! represented next season. So far, none of the major characters have been eliminated early in Japan and Korea. Bass player Mio Akiyama, regarded as the character with the greatest chances of progressing in any tournament for SaKura High's light music club of now-international renown; guitarist Azusa Nakano, exploited for her catgirl tendencies and tan; and the Hirasawa sisters-Yui, the bubbly, but quick-learning lead guitarist for the band, and her more proper and dignified younger sister Ui-were invited.

In Manila, Akiyama took down Nakano 1881-1151, while Yui easily got the upper hand over Ui 2019-886 in Cairo.

Saki is another show that you can bet will have someone represented next season. In a battle of rivals, widely-touted and widely-endowed Nodoka Haramura bested the flagship character of the show, Saki Miyanaga by the schore of 1284-818 in Jakarta. Also competing from Saki were both Koromo Amae and the taco-munching risk taker Yuki Kataoka. Kataoka won a close 1075-1001 contest in Paris.

In the closest match of the day, Riannon of Tears to Tiara defeated Alisia Melchiott 1036-1028 in Moscow. You can bet on these two making a run to be here next season.

Strike Witches has not been given much love on the other side of the Pacific, but four members of the 501st were invited to compete. In a battle of two Witches that have been celebrated as one of the strongest-if not the strongest-yuri pair, Sanya V. Litvyak defeated Eila Ilmatar Juutilainen 1415-871 in Lonmdon. Francesca Lucchini, the trouble-making, fang-flashing warrant officer of note, was no match for the franchise: Yoshika Miyafuji. She prevailed, 1038-846, in Lima.

Sora wo Kakeru Shoujo is another series you should look out for. Two of its flasgship characters competed today: Akiha Shishido and Itsuki Kannagi. Shishido prevailed in Tehran 1012-886. Alice of Pandora Hearts and Regios's Felli Loss could be potentials to enter next year's edition. Alice got the edge here, winning 1333-1215 in Bangkok.

Queen's Blade also makes a bid to be in next year's tournament. Nanael defeated Tomoe easily, 1203-624 in Bogota.

Winry Rockbell of Full Metal Alchemist had three words to say after her 1781-538 blasting of Allison Whittington of Allison and Lillia in Santiago: "I WANT IN!!!"

Also competing today were a number of famous male personalities. Lelouch Lamperouge was too good for Kyon in a 1883-1280 domination in Kinshasa. In a match of franchise guys, Mariya Shidou of Maria Holic scored an impressive 1453-1372 victory over Hayate Ayasaki of Hayate the Combat Butler!! in Toronto.

Ciel Phantomhive may have finished second to the Black Butler himself, Mr. Sebastian Michaels, but does that mean he would be considered to take care of business if there was a male division of the ISML? The 1270-1426 defeat to Makoto of Minami-ke suggests that it may not be time to seriously consider him right now. But the potential is still there, as the man who calls himself "One Hell Of A Butler" was managing the household while the master of the Phantomhive estate was conducting his match in Algiers.

Hey, if the CLANNAD girls can get the job done, why not Tomoya Okazaki? Sure he can. He knocked dow Ouran High Host Club's very own Tamaki Suou 1682-875 in Milan.

Nagahiko Fujisaki over Shigo Chara pounced on Kaname Kuroi of Vampire Knight, 1311-1133 in Madrid. Death Note's Light "Kira" Yagami prevailed over Jun Watarase 1625-1248 in Syndey. However, rumors that Yagami wrote Watarase's name in his book to deal him a swift defeat have yet to be confirmed.

Everyone's favorite Full Metal Alchemist, the world-famous Edward Elric, routed Kyouya Hibari of Reborn! by the score of 1702-1193 in Santo Domingo. And in an old-school showdown in Katowice, Inuyasha, the franchise character of the show with the same name, took out Yu Yu Hakusho's Kurama 1288-938.

After their match, Scarlet and Mizunashi were interviewed on the prospects of an International Saimoe League men's division.

"I think it would be great," Scarlet said, sipping tea (or was it blood? Hmmm). "See, we love guys that look cute. And having a men's division in the ISML will prove that there are androgynous personalities worth voting for. I support it."

"I don't know," said Mizunashi with a heavy blush. "To have guys fighting each other for a crown is a bit of a stretch for me to visualize. But I think it could be a great idea; we just have to see if it does get implemented."

The next phase in the 2009 regular season, the Ruby stage, gets underway on Monday.

ISML 2009: Suiseiseki claims her first-ever necklace as Haruhi's streak ends

ISML 2009: Suiseiseki claims her first-ever necklace as Haruhi's streak ends

July 11, 2009

For the second time this season, a Rozen Maiden Alice Doll wins an International Saimoe League necklace.

Suiseiseki, the celebrated doll known for her "Desu" ending to her sentences, clinched the ISML 2009 Emerald necklace with a 1552-1433 victory over C.C. in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Outside the Rogers Center, where a certain football team donning green-the Saskatchewan Roughriders-was crushing the Toronto Argonauts, she was surrounded by Suigintou (who defeated Nanoha Takamachi 1828-1301 to finish unbeaten in Mexico City), Shinku (who wrapped up her campaign with a Rozen Maiden sweep, defeating Hanyuu Furude in Bogota 1581-1335), Kanaria, Kirakishou, Hina-Ichigo, her twin sister Souseiseki, Jun and Nori Sakurada, and Tomoe Kashiwaba in a victory rally.

"Hello everyo~~~ne desu!" she said, to the roars of the crowd, many rasing banners that said, "DESU!" and "She's back DESU!" and "DESU is just the beginning DESU!" as well as flag that had the Rozen Maiden logo, Suiseiseki's face and green maple leaves.

She continued on. "Well, I got my necklace desu. What have you ever got desu ka?" she said to Shinku with a wry grin.

"Hmmmph, as long as I got a victory to finish this campaign off, I don't care," she said, drinking her cup of tea to the laughter of the crowd.

"ohhhh? I have a necklace too," said Suigintou with an evil laugh.

With a sigh, Shinku said, "Mercy me, you two are so full of it today."

"Yare yare desu. Any way desu," Suiseiseki said, turning to the crowd, "I want to thank every one of you for believe in me and us here on this stage desu. You made it happen desu. Give yourseves a big hand desu!"

"DE-SU! DE-SU! DE-SU!" chanted the crowd.

"I love you Suiseiseki!" said one fan from the top of his lungs.

"Stay away from my sister," said Souseiseki, brandishing her shears.

"Mou, come on, you know you're not competing this season desu. Lighten up desu," she said, hugging Souseiseki.

The angry scowl turned into a smile, then a wink. "I was only kidding," she said. "On behalf of all of us," she said to the crowd, "we want to thank the people here standing with us: Shinku, Suigintou, Hina, Kanaria, Kirakishou, myself, Jun, Nori and Tomoe, and of course, all of you for your continuing support."

"That's right desu," Suiseiseki added, grabbing the microphone. "We are the Rozen Maiden Alice Dolls, and when you believe in us desu, we will never die desu! We love you desu! Now let's play some more in the Ruby stage desu!!!"

The crowd roared one more time as ALI PROJECT's "Seishoujo Ryouiki" and "Kinjirareta Asobi" blared through the speakers.

A few curious Saskatchewan Roughriders took photos of the event.

"I guess it was no surprise that my team won, she [Suiseiseki] won, so everybody that likes green won today," said an anonymous Roughriders fan from Moose Jaw, SK. "It's a great feeling."

Defending champion Fate Testarossa Harlaown dropped her last match in the Emerald stage to Shana in Tokyo, 1879-1401.

Meanwhile, in Kinshasa, Congo DR, Haruhi Suzumiya's unbeaten streak ended with a 1853-1412 loss to Tomoyo Sakagami.

"I knew that if I didn't get a good turnout, everyone would have at least defeat heading into the Ruby stage," Suzumiya said after the match. "I think Fate's tenure as the defending champions could end this year at the hands of a worthy challenger like Tomoyo or Yuki. But I hope I can bounce back on Ruby match day 1."

In fact, it was a rare clean sweep for CLANNAD.

Kyou Fujibayashi defeated Kagami Hiiragi 1492-1259 in Milan, Nagisa Furukawa took down Rena Ryuuguu 1696-1366 in Istanbul, Fuuko Ibuki chalked up an easy 1871-760 victory over Shiori Misaka in Santiago, Kotomi Ichinose sounded off Sakura Kinomoto 1790-1299 in Buenos Aires, and even Mei Sunohara got a win-a 1881-830 destruction of Remilia Scarlet in Sao Paulo.

Fate/Stay Night also had a clean sweep.

Rin Tosaka prevailed over Rika Furude 1723-1370 in London. Saber sliced down Alice Carroll 1982-802 in Moscow and Illyasviel von Einzbern edged Sayuri Kurata 1603-1368 in Los Angeles.

Yet another group that also held its own were the Toradora! representatives. Minori Kushieda blasted Tamaki Kawazoe 1611-915 in Paris, Ami Kawashima took out Louise Francoise Le Blanc De La Valliere 1448-1242 in Lima and Taiga Aisaka rolled past Reimu Hakurei 1816-1170 in Katowice.

In other action...Chii defeated Aya Shameimaru 1407-926 in Mumbai, Vita won a 1154-1138 thriller over Evangeline MCDowell in New York City, Mikuru Asahina wiped out Mikoto Misaka 1967-973 in Shanghai, Nagi Sanzen'in defeated Konata Izumi in an impressive 1743-1474 victory in Lagos, Maria rolled past Shiki Ryogi 1976-90 in Seoul and Nayuki Minase defeated Nagi 1578-1013 in Karachi.

Ami Hinamori tallied up a 1187-1105 victory over Anya Earlstreim in Dhaka, Yuuhi Katagiri thumped Akari Mizunashi 1624-834 in Manila, Yuki Nagato scored a thrilling 1436-1426 nail-biter over Hinagiku Katsura in Jakarta, Mai Kawasumi rolled past Index L. Prohibitorum in Tehran and Ayu Tsukimiya defeated Kallen Kozuki (stadtfeld) in an easy 1625-980 decision in Bangkok.

Wrapping up action in the Emarald phase...Horo chomped up Tsukasa Hiiragi and her balsamic vinegar 1738-1341 in Algiers, Hayate Yagami tore down Kirino Chiba 1643-769 in Madrid, Konjiki no Yami (Golden Darkness) whipped Ayumu "Osaka" Kasuga 2070-684 in Sydney and Marisa Kirisame took out Patchouli Knowledge 1261-674 in Santo Domingo.

Shana's victory also moves her to number one in the overall ISML rankings. Chii, Katarigi, McDowell and Kirisame are eliminated from the competition.

Anime Expo 2009, Day 3 continued

So, I continue on with more thoughts on Day 3. You know, one of the biggest gripes with attendees at any public gathering is that some of them are unprepared. I ask someone, "Hey, do you have the time?" and they look at me as if (a) they don't know English (in which I wonder what the fuck are they doing here in America if they don't know how to speak the language) or (b) they say, "I don't know."

Seriously, come prepared to help. I literally had to ask an attendee in her 50's the time. "10:45 a.m." she said.

AX Idol seating draws nears. And so, after blowing $200 dollars on doujin work, I waited for a while to get my seat in the front.

This Western Michigan man named Seth Chiplock pulled off a great rendition of Kenshin Himura; you swore he already was a professional and he was cheating.

But it sure was a great show. And this was his first-ever convention, so it was all the more sweeter.

So the main itinerary was like this. 12:45: head to Exhibit Hall for drawing. 1:10, return to AX Idol for Tsunku's scrutiny, 3:05 head to Lindsay Plaza to break out the camera, 3:30 K-ON! photo shoot, 4:00 Bag Check, 7:30 Masquerade, 10:00 more bag checking.

And as I took my seat, I wondered who would topple Orange County for best of show. I liked where I sat. I had a side view of the action, while seeing the entire crowd. It's like Spring Sing.

Unfortunately, it was a disappointment.

The performers looked like they were struggling, the intermissions was woefully out of sync, and just about all the attendees left the place, bored out of their shoes.

Without ado, here were the entries, and my thoughts.

Entry 1: "Supah Kaizoku." (One Piece) Not bad stuff to start.

Entry 3: "Princess Ash.," Glamorous. Love it.

Entry 4: "I'm At A Con!" by Godly Productions and Soy Sauce Cosplay. Get down! Keepin' it real. Not sure this has a place at AX, but they represented everything Chicago is good for apparently.

Entry 5: "Shin Musha Gundam" by Zeonic Corps, celebrating 30 years of excellence. Look out, he's gonna fall apart! That went well...

Entry 6: "Inquisition: The Lady of Death." Fashionista.

Entry 7: "Street Fighter IV: Let's Get Ready To Rumble!" Ken Masters vs. Ryu...and then it turns into a dance number, with Dan Hibiki wrecking it beyond recognition. Brilliant.

Entry 9: "Buddha: The Boisterous Ball of Spiral Power." 8 skipped? Hmmm...Rickrolled. Cheap.

Entry 10: "Pandora Hearts: Oz Bezarius's Excellent Adventures In Wonderland." Conversation. Love those suits. Yes, your Majesty.

Entry 11: "King of Fighters." This guy pacing around in the back is made of win. Some good rapping. Saturday night fun. Zzzzzz...

Entry 12: "Dr. Stein Knows Where Chaos Will Ensue." (Soul Eater) Some good sketch comedy.

Entry 13: "Sephiroth." That was it? Only 10 fucking seconds!? For shame!

Entry 14: "The Exorcists: Street Performing." True. Hilarious. They're doing [sic] it wrong.

Entry 16: "The Debilitating Effects of OTP-One True Pairing." Comedy and signs full of pairs. Left and right...but I am not sure why Brangelina is still talked about. Didn't those two break up already?

Entry 17: "Uniting Forces Through Song and Dance...What R P Go Golies!" Not a fan of the skit name, but definitely a fan of the dance. The Caramelldansen by Final Fantasy Cosplayers. On Day 4, they would form a Caramell chain with others.

Entry 18: "The Gala Malicious Squad. Hai!" So much for direction.

Entry 19: "Guns of the Righteous." Nicholas Wolfwood from Trigun and Lady from Devil May Cry flashing their guns. The exhibition of artillery and courtesy.

Entry 21: "Final Fantasy VII: Not That Much, save for Sephiroth" Him again. He's gonna need to fill himself up; he looks quite malnourished.

Entry 22: "Anything Pokemon Can Do..." Pikachu vs. Charizard. Nice musical number.

Entry 24: Zone Zero presents: "Bishamon & Kiyouyomi get it on." Stalemate? No, Bishamon wins.

Entry 25: "Shaman King" by Toddler Boy Cosplay. Big number here. A dance number. Good contender. Using "Move Your Feet" by Junior Senior. Brilliant.

Entry 26: "Sessho as Suigintou." The old lady has left the building...

Entry 27: "Last Call for Galaxy Express 39: All Aboard!" Go, Maetel. Good angle.

Entry 28: "Sakura on the Run" by That's What She Said Cosplay. That went well...

Entry 29: "Let's Fresh! Concert" by Cure Peach, Berry and Pine. (Yes! Precure 5) Fat ladies...but they are devoted. I'll give them that.

Entry 30: "Ears That Fluff." Comedy between Inu-Yasha and Sesshomaru. Don't like Sessh's accent...but that cell phone...

Entry 31: "Fly on the Wings of Chaos." A Ragnarok Online skit. Go Lag. I have lost the game.

Entry 33: "Iji as Emperor Lelouch" by XDCosplayXD. Don't Die, Hooch! Spoilers!!! XD

Entry 34: "Abel in the Final Battle." (Trinity Blood). Elaborate outfits. Good drama.

Entry 35: "Sex. Money. Sex. Money. Cat. Gay? I'm not sure. Curious and Curious presents: Are You Curious Yet?" An Avenue Q rendition.

Entry 36: "Phoenix Wright: Time Travel Turnabout" by Combo Breakers. Using "The Cake Is A Lie." Hungry now for McDs.

Entry 37: "Dirge of Cerberus. Final Fantasy VII Deleted Scene." Pretty good acting.

Entry 38: "Before there was Yu-Gi-Oh!...before there was Pokemon...there was another monster-catching game: Jade Cocoon." Yes, these outfits are good.

Entry 39: "The Midday Tea Party." A Kuroshitsuji skit. I believe this won Best of Show. Good musical number. Definitely "The Most Wonderful Show Of The Year."

Entry 40: "Eternal Dream." Hey, it's Sailor Cosmos. And it's the music the Orlando Magic used in the 2009 NBA Finals! Yeah!

Entry 41: "Across the Frontier" by Coconut Bubble Sex Cosplay. Too bad this group got shafted by bad audio.

Entry 43: "Hakaida Squad." Advertisement. Also used in "The Humans Are Dead" music video.

Entry 44: "The Young Samurai...It Is Her Idea That He Is Nominated For...Ooooh!" Hatsukashi~~~yo~~~...

Entry 45: "Puppets Tutu" by Tipping Hat Productions. The magic cometh...

Entry 46: "Hitsugaya Itoshiro." Bloody fangirls...

Entry 47: "Pokeball Z" Satoshi turning into a Super Saiyan...*shudder*

Entry 49: "Brawl Babes." Samus. Zelda. Peach. The Pink Ice Climber. They sure can't dance. But they sure can fight.

Entry 50: "Tira." She lmows how to use her thing-er, ring.

Entry 51: "Designers...Make It Work!" by Project Cosplay. Here we have the fashion show, in which Tifa Lockhart wins yet again.

Entry 54: "Abershiro Blames Chrono For The Entire Thing." Naruto Again? Ms. Really Really really Bad Dancer.

Intermission: South Hills High School (West Covina), Ross Middle School (Artesia), Pamela Moss, Fujiko-Chan.
